Adversity affects millions of people across this country every day and once again it has hit our town of Cato.
On Oct. 2, 2007, the Cato Town Board voted not to renew Meridian's fire contract.
When asked why, the Cato Town Board had no answers. Their actions have become a travesty.
Many people in our town live on fixed incomes.
Their homeowners policies are going up 40 to 50 percent. Property taxes are also going up because of poor judgment on the part of the Cato Town Board.
We have to face the fact that our lives are at stake.
If you stop breathing and your heart stops, your brain cells die within 4 to 6 minutes, which is biological death. This is irreversible.
CIMVAC is good, but it is impossible for them to reach us with this time frame.
Meridian's responders have responded in one minute.
Our community asked Linda Chapman, Ronald Dennison and Gerald Hunter on several occasions to negotiate so changes could be made. They flatly refused. This shows that they really don't know what they are doing.
Cato and Jordan fire departments are out for the money, an increase from $1.03 to $1.30 per thousand assessed valuation.
Who are these people who play with our lives. People traveling through Meridian's territory are also at risk.
Remember, elections will be held Tuesday, Nov. 6. We urge you all to get out and vote. Our survival depends on it.
