DERUYTER - Fifteen kindergartners were accidentally given Ritalin pills Thursday by a school nurse who thought she was dispensing fluoride pills to the children, school officials said.
DeRuyter Elementary School Principal Janice Ahlsen said the school nurse inadvertently administered the wrong prescription to the children but, they spit out the pills quickly. The children, who take chewable fluoride supplements each day as part of a school program, spit the Ritalin out quickly because of the bitter taste, Ahlsen said.
“When they bit into it, it tasted terrible and they made a ruckus,” she said. “Then the adults in the room told them to spit it out.”
Ritalin is a stimulant often given to children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.
Ahlsen said the nurse got the fluoride tablets mixed up with the prescription drug belonging to one of the students that was in a similar bottle.
All the children's' parents were contacted immediately and told what happened, and none of the children showed any of the side effects.
