WEEDSPORT - The Weedsport field hockey team poured on the offense in the first half - and found the net in the second.
Seniors Chelsea Paquette and Taylor Roe each scored once in their last regular season home game as the Warriors defeated county rival Southern Springs 2-0 on Thursday.
“Eventually we did capitalize on a couple of chances,” said Warrior coach Theresa Leonardi.
“We had a lot more that we didn't capitalize on, and we were fortunate that they didn't capitalize on some of theirs.”
Gerry Nedza's defense kept Weedsport on their toes for most of the contest, and didn't allow the second goal until two minutes remaining.
“Overall, I think the girls played pretty well,” Nedza said. “I only have seniors and sophomores- there are no juniors. Last time we played [Weedsport] it was 4-0, so I think we did a good job holding them until halftime, anyway.”
The teams traded possessions for the first 10 minutes before Weedsport took control, putting together three shots on eight penalty corners.
The Wolves had back-to-back corners to end the half, but goalie Kaitlin Hammersley stopped a shot to keep the game scoreless at intermission.
The Warriors started off the second half with a corner and continued to put pressure on goalie Katie Smith (five saves) until Paquette slipped one past her at the 23:20 mark.
Twenty minutes later, Amy Sanchez found Roe for the insurance goal.
While it was late in the second half, the Warriors still needed their defense to come up big.
The Wolves came dangerously close to scoring on two occasions, both involving Melona Ott.
Ott and fellow sophomore Molly Clifford broke away after Weedsport's first goal, but Ott couldn't find a passing lane to an open Clifford before the Warriors cleared the ball.
Ott got open again towards the end of regulation, but Hammersley (two saves) stepped out of the goal and tied her up before she could score.
“If we don't mark people correctly, and we leave people open they're going to get good shots,” Leonardi said.
“Our goalie has done a great job all year, but you can't leave people open and take your chances.”
Weedsport led in shots, 7-2, and corners, 12-5.
It was the last regular season game for both teams. Southern Springs and Weedsport both graduate eight seniors.
The Warriors (14-4) await their sectional seeding. Section III pairings will be announced Sunday.
