I would like to address this letter to the residents of Throop and those who live in the northwest portion of the city of Auburn. The city of Auburn has announced its intention of the expansion of cell number four at the landfill.
In a recent survey in the town of Throop, the existence, operation, and expansion of the landfill was the number one concern of residents.
Particularly disconcerting to town residents was the fact that the landfill is a depository of refuse from communities throughout not only New York state, but from communities even outside of New York.
Residents resent the fact that the landfill appears to be merely a money making activity for the city of Auburn and disregards the long-term adverse effects this operation has on our community and the surrounding area.
With its continued and unabated growth, the landfill will soon rival the Seneca Meadows landfill in Seneca County, now the highest point in Seneca County.
The residents of Auburn and the town of Throop have 45 days to provide comment to the DEC (Department of Environmental Conservation) regarding the expansion of the landfill.
Please direct your comments to the following address: Department of Environmental Conservation, Regional Permit Administrator, 615 Erie Blvd. East, Syracuse, NY 13204.
The time to let your voice be heard on this most important topic is now.
