Bill Michaels' life to be celebrated
Friends and family of Auburn native Bill Michaels will gather at Hoopes Park Clubhouse in Auburn at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21. Michaels died on July 30 after a 2 1/2 year battle with lung cancer.

His friends have organized this event to celebrate his life, as was his wish. Bob Piorun and Julie Howard will perform music with selections personally requested by Bill.

Following his move to Denver 30 years ago, Bill annually returned to Auburn to visit family, friends, participate on a Great Race team, and attend Doubledays games.

He will forever be remembered for his optimism, enthusiasm, love of sports, and loyalty to family and friends.

The public is welcome to attend this celebratory remembrance of Bill. Friends and acquaintances unable to attend may share a reflection or anecdote by sending an e-mail to spirit.of.bill@gmail.com.

U.S. Postal Service holding food drive

U.S. Postal Service mail carriers will be collecting non-perishable food items for the St. Alphonsus food pantry today and Saturday.

Residents can leave canned goods near their mailboxes for the carriers to pick up.

The Postal Carrier Food Drive has been an annual tradition for 20 years.

“Our date has changed, but our mission remains the same,” Auburn Postmaster Elizabeth Teeter said in a press release. “We are working with our neighbors to help other neighbors in need.”

Last year's drive yielded nearly 800,000 pounds of food items in the Albany District, which runs from Plattsburgh to Binghamton and the Finger Lakes to Massachusetts.

Throop fire causes minor damage

An small fire produced a large amount of smoke while causing minor damages Thursday afternoon in the town of Throop.

Throop fire personnel responded to a call at 1:15 p.m. for an electrical fire at a Powers Road residence, fire officials said.

The fire started in a bathroom ceiling and caused some smoke damage in the attic before it was extinguished, according to officials.

No one was injured, and fire officials described the damage as “minimal.”

The Auburn Fire Department assisted in the response.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, authorities said.
