Getting to know customers greatest reward
Each Wednesday, The Citizen features someone in the food services industry from the Finger Lakes community in The Banks:
This week, we spotlight Donna MacDuffee.
Q. What is the one food you cannot live without? Why?
A. I really like seafood because it doesn't fill you up too fast.
Q. Fill in the blank. People would be surprised to know that even though I work in the food industry, when I am at home in the kitchen, I __________.
A. Don't use a cookbook.
Q. What do you like most about living and working in the Finger Lakes region?
A. Getting to know the customers. I've waited on families when their babies were born and I've been here 20 years since and seen them grow up.
Q. If you were given $1 million to open your own restaurant, describe it and what type of food you would serve.
A. It'd be a diner for the same reason I like working here - we'd get a lot of regulars and families, and I could get to know the community and the people.
Q. Where would it be located?
A. In a small town or community.
Q. On the day of your restaurant's grand opening, if you could select anyone in the world to be your first three guests, who would they be?
A. Toby Keith, Nicholas Cage and Harrison Ford.
Q. Describe your most embarrassing moment while working on the job.
A. Spilling a glass of soda on a customer. It went on her blouse and her purse. But I knew her, she was a regular, and we all laughed and her whole family got their meal for free.
Q. What is your favorite junk food?
A. Potato chips - cheddar and sour cream.
Q. What have you learned are the top three ways to run a successful food business?
A. Listen to your customers, treat employees fairly and never serve anything that you wouldn't eat yourself.
Q. If you weren't working in the food business what would you like to be doing?
A. Definitely not sitting behind a desk. I'd be helping people decorate their homes.
Q. Ughh. What's the one food which you absolutely can't stomach?
A. Sausage.
