Cancer support group to meet
WeCAre, a cancer support group, will hold its next meeting from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, at the First Presbyterian Church, 97 E. Genesee Street, Skaneateles, in the Connor Room. Parking is available.

Drive to provide needed ‘apple' a day

Kay Schwartz, chief operating officer of the American Red Cross reports that there is a dangerously low supply of A-Negative blood. The Red Cross asks A-Negative blood donors to schedule an appoint to donate blood in the next five days.

A drive will be held 11:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, at the First United Methodist Church, 99 South St., Auburn.

During this drive, donors may enjoy a slice of apple pie and, perhaps, win an Apple iPHONE and six months of basic service. Donors must collect a “Points for Pints” scratch-off card at the canteen and go on-line to enter the contest.

Cayuga Home now training partner

The Oregon Social Leaning Center (OSLC) and Cayuga Home for Children have announced that Cayuga Home has become OSLC's first North American training and consultation partner.

This partnership enables Cayuga Home for Children to directly provide start-up training, implementation and on-going consultation services to providers in the eastern United Sates who wish to begin Multi-Dimensional Treatment Foster Care (MTFC) programs. MTFC is the only out-of-home care model certified as evidence-based by the landmark University of Colorado at Boulder study, “Blueprints for Violence

Prevention.”

Edward M. Hayes, chief executive officer of Cayuga Home for Children said, “We are pleased with the faith TFC Consultants and OSLC have placed in us by making us their third partner in the work and their first partner in North America. This is a validation of Cayuga Home for Children's leadership in implementing evidence-based programs.”

Flu shots distributed for community

Regional Medical Services will offer flu shots for seniors. Seniors must bring their Medicare Cards to the clinic.

For those covered by Medicare B, the immunizations are billed at no cost to Medicare. For those not covered by Medicare, a flu shot is $30 and Pneumonia is $45. Anyone belonging to a Medicare HMO must pay for the vaccine at the clinic and will be given an insurance form to submit to your HMO or other insurance carrier.

Psychics, holistic health featured

The Cortland Psychic Fair and Holistic Living Expo will be held from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, and from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, at the Ramada Inn (former Holiday Inn) 2 River St., Cortland.

The expo will feature 12 renowned psychics and readers, holistic practitioners, herbalists, New Age and alternative health vendors, lecturers and entertainment by Merry Mischief (Saturday) and Gypsy Red (Sunday).

Admission is $6, and attendees are asked to bring a non-perishable food item to benefit the Cortland County Nutrition Program, Cortland Helping Hands Food Pantry.

Lecture given on advance planning

“Advance Care Planning: Sharing Your Wishes” will be the topic of a free, public lecture from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, in Auburn Memorial Hospital auditorium, located on the hospital's lower level, 17 Lansing St., Auburn. Barbara Bowen, administrator of the Human Resources Coalition, and Michele Nolan-Bell, AMH director of quality management, will speak.

Breast cancer topic of women's event

In recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Women in Business Network (WBN) will host the Cayuga County Health Department that will review the importance of regular screening for breast cancer, as well as current information regarding risk factors, screening techniques and procedures for breast self-examination. The presentation will be held 8 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 24, at the Cornell Cooperative Extension Education Center, 248 Grant Ave., Auburn.

The presentation will include a description of a local program that covers the cost of breast care services for women with high deductibles, limited coverage or no health insurance.

YMCA offers youth racquetball league

The Auburn YMCA-WEIU has announced a Youth Racquetball program for youth ages 7 through 18. The emphasis is on learning and refining skills, practice games and fun. The seven-week program will begin the week of Oct. 29.

Beginner lessons for youth who have never played racquetball or have played very little will meet 4:30 to 5:15 p.m. Mondays. Players learn correct grip and hitting technique and safety guidelines.

Intermediate lessons for youth who have had some experience will meet 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. Mondays. Advanced lessons will meet 4:15 to 5:15 p.m. Thursdays.
