SYRACUSE - Still feeling the effects of another big loss, Syracuse head coach Greg Robinson said Sunday that he was submitting tape of a vicious hit on Orange quarterback Andrew Robinson to Big East officials for review.
Andrew Robinson was sacked high in the final minute of the second quarter of Saturday's game against Rutgers by defensive back Joe Lefeged, and the play resulted in a lost fumble at the Rutgers 34-yard line.
No penalty was signaled. Greg Robinson thought the officials missed an obvious call, which stopped a promising Syracuse drive with the Scarlet Knights ahead 24-14.
“That was a vicious blow to the head, helmet to helmet,” Greg Robinson said. “That is a little frustrating when I look at it. Andrew's too competitive. He's got to know when to hold them and when to fold them.”
Rutgers (4-2, 1-1 Big East) overcame a 14-0 first-quarter deficit to win 38-14, its third straight win over Syracuse (1-6, 1-2).
The hit by Lefeged was one of five sacks by the Scarlet Knights, who swarmed around Andrew Robinson the entire game and knocked him down several other times after he threw the ball.
“I'm sick of seeing him get hit,” Syracuse senior offensive guard Carroll Madison said after the loss. “It makes me sick to my stomach every time I see it. But we're playing as hard as we can, and that's all you can ask from any player.”
Andrew Robinson has endured 29 sacks this season but has shown no sign of wearing down.
“I have to keep my mind on the things I can control,” the 6-foot-3, 222-pound sophomore quarterback said. “I'm not really too worried about it. If I let the hits get to me, then that makes me a worse player, and that can't happen.”
The three straight losses to Rutgers have been by a combined 107-30, and Saturday's game added more spark to a budding rivalry.
Even though the Scarlet Knights held a commanding lead, star tailback Ray Rice, a Heisman Trophy candidate, played deep into the fourth quarter.
Rice, who was bound for Syracuse but chose to attend Rutgers after former head coach Paul Pasqualoni was fired in favor of Greg Robinson, rushed for 196 yards and three touchdowns.
And the ESPN broadcasting crew chipped in by airing some disparaging comments about Rutgers' recruiting in New Jersey allegedly made by Greg Robinson in a preproduction meeting on Friday: “Paul Pasqualoni was here 14 years. We got five (recruits) in one year. That would be 70 if we were here that long. We're going to recruit their tails off. They're (Rutgers) a one-year wonder. Do I like them? No. The recruiting thing - you wait and see.”
The telecast then showed Robinson and Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano doing the customary greeting at midfield prior to the game in the Carrier Dome, and Schiano turning away with a smirk on his face.
Syracuse officials said the meeting was not taped, and Greg Robinson said Sunday that his words were taken out of context.
“I'm not going to get into all that. That's getting edgy,” he said. “I was simply asked something, and I gave an answer. That's the bottom line.”
Notes: Syracuse offensive tackle Ryan Durand suffered a sprained ankle against Rutgers and is day to day. ... Syracuse hosts Buffalo on Saturday. The Bulls are tied for first in the MAC East at 2-0 with Miami of Ohio, which beat Syracuse 17-14 last month.
