To my understanding, the proposed location of the pig cafo, will be approximately a half mile west of the Port Byron thruway rest stop. With the prevailing winds being from the west, this should have a lasting impression on tourists visiting there.

Imagine this: A gentle summer breeze, you've been driving through beautiful upstate New York. You stop at this plaza, pull up to the drive thru, roll the window down, the stench hits you.

The conversation could be like this:

“I would like a pig mac with my fries.”

“Hold the pickles and my nose.”

This should be great for New York's tourism industry. This is still better than it will be for the local people who live close by.

I count over 100 residences, within approximately a 1- mile radius. All of the village of Montezuma in a 2-mile radius. And roughly half of the village of Port Byron in a 3-mile distance (also due east of this place.)

The problem is not farming! It is as the meaning of CAFO stands for - concentrated animal feeding operation.

In moderation, as the typical family farm exemplifies, the water and air pollution is acceptable.

Concentrated in my opinion is excessive. Just like any thing else. Eating, alcohol consumption, the speed you drive your automobile. (The examples are endless) Moderation is good and excessive is not!

Excessive amounts of animal waste can pollute ground water and the air. We need an environmental impact study to identify any negative impacts on the local environment now - not later when the damage is done. We don't need another rubber stamp approval by a government bureaucracy more concerned with profits and politics than the health and well being of the people.
