Kalichstein started studying piano at the age of 4 and attended the Juilliard School when he was 16.

After winning the Young Concert Artists Auditions, Kalichstein was invited by Leonard Bernstein to perform Beethoven's Fourth Symphony with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. The concert was also televised.

Winning the Leventritt Award in 1969 opened many more doors to Kalichstein at a young age.

“I got to play one season with some of the greatest orchestras in the world, and I was a young kid,” he said. “It was this feeling that I've joined an incredible group of musicians throughout history - a very awesome feeling.”

Today, Kalichstein serves as the chamber music advisor to the Kennedy Center in New York City and often appears in Carnegie Hall's “Keyboard Virtuosi” series. He also tours with the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson trio.

Kalichstein savors the three paths of communication he feels are at work during his performances: the one-sided interaction with the composer, the intrapersonal communication with himself and the effect each note exerts upon the audience.

“It has to happen all at the same time, so everything seems to feel right at home,” he said. “It doesn't always happen, but I aspire to that.”

The program for Kalichstein's Westminster performance consists of two pieces that bookend the body of work of one of his favorite composers, Johannes Brahms, as well as works by Robert Schumann, another famous artist from the Romantic era.

Kalichstein's recital will conclude with a selection of Hungarian anthems.

The Adams Foundation series started in 2001 with a performance from Auburn natives and series organizers Richard and John Contiguglia, who will also be in attendance at this weekend's show.

The Contiguglias performed a concert at a 40th class reunion at Yale University attended by music lover and philanthropist Steven Adams. By staying in touch with the brothers, Adams learned of the need by many of today's pianists for performance opportunities.

In 2001, Adams started the eponymous series with a recital by the Contiguglia brothers in Auburn. The series has since grown to 103 recitals in 25 communities in 19 states.

Past Adams concerts in Auburn have featured Ursula Oppens, Jon Nakamatsu, James Tocco, Ann Schein and Jeanne Stark-Iochmans. Nakamatsu will return to Auburn in April for the second Auburn show of the seventh Adams season.

Reasonable ticket prices of $15 for single performances and $25 for series passes have packed the venues of Adams shows. The Foundation pays for the remainder of costs.

And with each ticket sold for the Adams series, the future is strengthened for performing concert pianists like Kalichstein.
