Alberici to be honored

On Thursday, Oct. 18 at Sacred Heart Parish Hall Gino Alberici will be honored.
Alberici is a graduate from West High School in the class of 1954.

In high school he held various class offices and played football, basketball, and baseball.

Alberici was also named to the U.S. High School All-American Football team in 1953.

Alberici attended St. Francis Preparatory School in Pennsylvania where he became co-captain of the football team and received scholarships from Holy Cross, Indiana, and Maryland.

He chose Holy Cross but due to a back injury had to cut short his career.

He graduated in 1960 with a BS degree in education, and went onto complete graduate studies at Syracuse and Oswego.

Alberici began a long and rewarding career as a teacher, coach, and mentor, serving 34 years at Port Byron High School.

He taught Global Studies, and coached soccer, football, and basketball. Gino was named High School Teacher of the year, and still ranks as one of New York State's winningest head coachess. He coached 32 years at Port Byron, winning 13 league titles, and had streaks of 22-0-1 and 23-0.

Alberici led his team to three appearances in the Carrier Dome Section III playoffs.

Alberici was named coach of the year in the Onondaga League play five times throughout his career.

In addition he was named coach of the year by the Blindmen and Criers Organization (comprised of members of the press, coaches, and officials) and received the Monsignor Straub Sportsman of the year award in 1990.

He was inducted in the Auburn High School Hall of Fame in 2003.

Alberici has been equally active in his community over the years, serving nine years as a member of the Auburn Board of Education, two of those as president.

He served on the board of directors of the Neighborhood House and on the United Way Board Retired Teacher Division. He served as commissioner of Pony League, is a former member of the Owasco Fire Department, a former member of the Owasco Bi-Centennial Committee, past member and president of Sacred Heart Parish Council and former chairman of past member and president of Sacred Heart Sports Night.

He also served on the CYO committee at Sacred Heart and was recreation Commissioner for the town of Owasco for several years.

Alberici is presently serving his second term as a member of the board of the town of Owasco. He is chairman of the Friends of Hospice Board, a member of the YMCA fitness board, and the Tompkins Trust Co. Business Board. Alberici also serves on the Cayuga County Parks and Trails Commission.

He serves as a Lector and Eucharistic minister at Sacred Heart Church as well as co-chairing the 50th anniversary committee.

Alberici's hobbies include cooking, gardening, traveling, and reading.

He also enjoys watching athletic events that his sons are coaching as well as spending time with his grandchildren and the activities they are participating in.
