As a taxpayer of the town of Montezuma, I am writing in regards to a proposed 2000 head swine CAFO, that is to be built on an existing farm approximately a mile from my house.
The farm sits on a hill and at the bottom of the hill, on the south side is a creek, which empties into the Seneca River. Could this creek possibly be in danger of being contaminated? There are homes within a quarter mile of this farm that would be greatly affected by this CAFO.
We all know that manure spreading is a part of farming. We all have wells in this community, (averaging about 45 feet deep) that could be in danger of being contaminated. Who will be responsible for that?
Will there be health concerns as to the quality of our air?
I'm sure I haven#'t even begun to touch the surface of the many environmental and health problems that could confront us should this farm be built. I, as do many of the citizens, feel that the environmental impact could be enormous and very far reaching.
I feel that my rights as a homeowner could possibly be violated should this CAFO be built. The value of my home will most certainly drop. Will my assessment go down?
I am all for farming, but CAFO#s are not farms; they are animal factories.
As I have lived in this area longer than the farmer who is proposing to build this CAFO, my question is do I have any rights here? It seems that I do not.
As a long time taxpayer and lifetime member of the community I feel that I deserve more than that.
I am asking that you please support our community in fighting this proposed CAFO from possible pollution of our air, land and creek and eventually the Seneca River. Thank you.
