State Fair did well to prohibit tobacco sales

Sunday, October 14, 2007 12:11 AM EDT

Reality Check of Onondaga and Cayuga counties would like to take this opportunity to thank the New York State Fair for a wonderful day.
Our group spent the day enjoying the fair, riding the rides, eating the food and informing others about our message.

Reality Check#'s message is to tell the tobacco industry that if they think they can continue targeting teens without any resistance they need a Reality Check.

We are not anti-smoker, we are anti-tobacco industry. One of our key messages is to try to reduce the number one preventable cause of death and disease in the world, tobacco use.

We applaud the New York State Fair for taking public health seriously and banning the sale of tobacco products and hope they continue working towards designated smoking areas.

We are looking forward to attending the fair and further spreading our message next year.

" I'd write something, but I can't see the keyboard with all of that second hand smoke. Hey, doesn't Al Gore still rent his land to the tobacco companies? "

" The problem with that, hillbilly, is that second-hand smoke KILLS. Imagine if we had all those hospital beds free for people with diseases and illnesses NOT caused by cigarettes?! "

" Reality Check. Why not make tobacco illegal? Because Governments make big $$$$$ on the sale of cigarettes. And as everyone will tell you the war on drugs isn't working. Could you imagine what would happen if tobacco was outlawed. So, as a non-smoker myself, I say "If you don't smoke don't start your smart." If you do smoke, then thank you for paying all those taxes for an item that makes you stink (smoke smell) may give you any number of illnesses (including cancer) and will probably kill you before you can draw social security. And I don't think the courts should hear anymore claims from smokers about how cigarettes have caused them such problems. It's time to say YOU have been warned about tobacco, now live with your decision. "
