The best spooks in, out of town

As Halloween approaches, Cayuga County and the Finger Lakes region at large is readying several events, from the festive to the spooky, for everyone to celebrate the occasion.
Local terror:

The Fingerlakes Mall's Fright Night Mansion will welcome visitors who want a good spooking from 6 to 9 p.m. every Thursday and from 6 to 10 p.m. every Friday and Saturday in October.

Children's matinees will also be held from 1 to 3 p.m. every Saturday this month at the mall, 1579 Clark St. Road, Aurelius.

Admission is $5 and proceeds go to Matthew House. For more information, call 255-1188.

Take haunted hayrides through the grounds of the Cayuga County Sportsmen's Association at 7 and 9:30 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays, Oct. 19, 20, 26 and 27, at the Sportsmen's club, 4620 Rockefeller Road, Owasco.

Skaneateles Artisans' “BOO-tiful Art” exhibit continues with a holiday party from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, at the gallery, 11 Fennell St., Skaneateles.

Winners of the silent auction will be announced and Christopher Molloy will provide music on the harp. Proceeds from the auction will be donated to a charitable cause. For more information, call 685-8580 or visit www.skaneatelesartisans.com.

IGNITE's Rollerskating for Reading party will get a macabre makeover, complete with costume contests, from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22, at the Reva Rollerdrome, 357 W. Genesee St., Auburn.

Tickets are $5 and proceeds will go toward Literacy Volunteers of America. The party will be followed by an IGnight at Chili's. For more information, call 252-8225.

Fingerlakes Mall will open its storefronts to young spooksters during the annual Trick-or-Treat Parade at noon Saturday, Oct. 27. Children 12 and younger must pre-register by Wednesday, Oct. 24, at the customer service center in the mall, 1579 Clark St. Road, Aurelius.

The cost is $2 a child and each child will be given an official Fingerlakes Mall trick-or-treat bag at registration. For more information, call 255-1188.

The Fair Haven Halloween Festival, featuring the Fifth annual Fantasy Fashion Witches Parade, will kick off at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, at the Village Park Bandstand, Fair Haven.

Donations will be gathered for the Fair Haven Food Pantry and the West Barrier Bar Beautification Fund. Prizes, a photo session and a reception for parade participants will be held at the Pleasant Beach Hotel, 14477 Fancher Ave.

Stuff your own scarecrow from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, at the Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center, 205 Genesee St., Auburn. Art teacher Jessica Rice will lead guests through the creation of their very own scary scarecrow. Children of all ages are welcome, and families are encouraged to participate together. Cider and doughnuts will be served.

Take a lantern-lit walk through the nighttime woods of central New York and listen to spooky stories when the Sterling Nature Center hosts Stories in the Night Woods at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, at the center, 15730 Jensvold Road, Sterling.

“The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” and other stories for both children and adults will be read. Guests are asked to bring flashlights or lanterns and also to dress appropriately for a short hike into the woods. The program will take place indoors if the weather is inappropriate. Refreshments will follow the hike.

The Skaneateles Community Center will present The Nostalgia Notes, a special Halloween presentation by a senior singing group, at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31, at the center, 97 State St., Skaneateles. The event is free. For more information, call 685-2266.

Reva's Rollerdrome will host a Safe Halloween Party from 6 to 8:30 Wednesday, Oct. 31, at the Rollerdrome, 357 W. Genesee St., Auburn. The party will include a mummy wrap, scream and costume contests and a free goodie bag for all guests.

More than a dozen different Star Wars characters from The 501st Legion's Garrison Excelsior and The Rebel Legion's Echo Base will appear in costume to add some excitement to the Star Wars portion of the Dickson's Halloween event held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, and Sunday, Oct. 28, at Grant Avenue Plaza in Auburn.

Featured guests include: Martin Klebba, Marty in “Pirates of the Caribbean” trilogy; Peter Mayhew, Chewbacca in “Star Wars” films; Felix Silla, Cousin Itt from the original “Addam's Family” and Twiki from Buck Rogers in the 󈬉th Century;” Rusty Goff, Oompa Loompa in “Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and Jawa from ”Star Wars: A New Hope;“ Malcolm Dixon, also an Oompa Loompa and Ewok from ”Star Wars: Return of the Jedi;“ Albert Wilkinson, who also played an Oompa Loompa; Margaret Pellegrini and Karl Slover, who both playmunchkins in ”The Wizard of Oz.“

Regional terror:

Get your share of scares at the New York State Fair's Fright Nights at The Fair, featuring “The Creature,” “The Circus of Horror” and “The CarnEvil Haunted House Macabre.” The shows are open from 7 to 11:30 p.m. Fridays and 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturdays through the end of the month at the upper level parking lot of the fair, 581 State Fair Blvd., Syracuse.

Single attraction tickets are $10 and combo tickets are $15. Discounts are available for groups of 12 or more. The event is recommended for ages 9 and older. For more information, call 703-9620.

Prepare for a scare on the tractor-drawn hay wagons of the 17th Annual Howling Hayride and Maze, open from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursdays and Saturdays from Thursday, Oct. 18, through Saturday, Oct. 27, at Maxwell Park, Badgley Road, DeWitt. After the hayride and a trip through the Haunted House, guests will be treated to cider and doughnuts. They can also try to find their way out of the eerie and mysterious maze.

The Great Zoo Boo will transform the Rosamond Gifford Zoo at Burnet Park into a bustling Halloween bash with hauntingly hilarious interactive characters. The Zoo Boo will be open from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays from Friday, Oct. 19, through Saturday, Oct. 27, at the zoo, 1 Conservation Place, Syracuse.

The Newark Rotary Club will host a spooktacular Halloween Bash from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Friday, Oct. 19, at the Newark Elks Lodge, 223 S. Main St., Newark. The evening will include a live magic show, a selection of '60s and '70s music for dancing and a costume contest. Many goodies, including a pie buffet, will be served.

Tickets are $25. No one younger than 21 will be admitted. Proceeds will benefit Rotary-sponsored projects.

After investigating paranormal activity at the Museum of Wayne County History, the Wayne Area Ghost Society will present its findings to the public at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25. This October History Night will take place at the museum, 21 Butternut St., Lyons.

The Ghost Society set up its equipment at the museum the evening of Friday, Oct. 5, after hearing several reports of spiritual activity at the former jail.

The Haunted Jail will then be resurrected at the museum from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26 and Saturday, Oct 27. Admission is $3 per person. The museum's Changing Exhibition Room will also feature a high school photo exhibit, “Necropolis Rising: Cemeteries of Wayne County,” at this time.

The lives - and deaths - of the ghosts believed to haunt Fort Ontario will be the subject of the Candle Light Ghost Tours Friday and Saturday, October 26 and 27. Tickets are $8 for the public and $5 for Friends of Fort Ontario members.

Halloween in the Park will feature live music, a game of “How the Jack-o-Lantern Came to Be,” haunted hayrides, magicians, a costume contest, games and food. The event will take placce from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26, and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, at Long Branch Park at Onondaga Lake Park, Long Branch Road, Liverpool.

More than 400 jack-o-lanterns and luminaria light the way through the darkness of two trails at An Enchanted Beaver Lake, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26, through Sunday, Oct. 28, at Beaver Lake Nature Center, 8477 E. Mud Lake Road, Baldwinsville.

The event, where everything is magical and nothing is scary, will also feature face painting, fortune telling and treats. Hot dogs, doughnuts and cider will also be available.
