Twelve interfaith churches have named 2007 as the year of the Heifer Project. Setting a goal of purchasing a $5,000 Heifer International “Gift Ark,” the Religious Communities of Auburn have been fundraising in their churches since January.
Lenten giving, Vacation Bible School and religious education programs and individual sales of Heifer animals have already raised more than $4,000.

The participating churches have been educating their members about the mission of Heifer International. A group of youth and adults from Westminster Presbyterian Church traveled to Rutland, Mass. where they cared for animals and learned about sustainable food resources at Heifer's Overlook Farm.

Heifer International is a non-profit, humanitarian organization dedicated to ending world hunger and caring for the earth by providing livestock, trees, training and other resources to help struggling families around the globe.

Animals from Heifer provide milk, eggs, wool, draft power and other benefits that can mean improved nutrition, higher income, education for children, health care and improved housing. An important part of Heifer's program is the pledge to pass on the gift, by promising to give the offspring of donated livestock to a neighboring family or village.

Since 1944, Heifer has helped 7 million families in more than 125 countries improve their quality of life and become more self-reliant.

A Heifer Fair will be held Saturday, Oct. 20, at Sacred Heart Church on Melrose Road in Auburn. Books, crafts, special children's items, holiday decorations, baked goods and gently used and new household items will be for sale at the fair. Heifer International Gift cards are available for $10 and raffle tickets for a handcrafted Noah's Ark quilt. Refreshments will be available in the morning and lunch at noon.

The Heifer Fair is sponsored by B'Nai Israel Congregation, First Presbyterian Church, First United Methodist, Holy Family, Sacred Heart/Saint Ann's, St. Alphonsus, St. Francis/St. Hyacinth Cluster, St. Mary's, Trinity Methodist, United Church of Auburn and Westminster Presbyterian Church.

The year of the Heifer Project will continue through December. A Korean cuisine dinner to benefit the Heifer Project will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, in the Junior Room of Westminster Presbyterian Church, 17 William St., Auburn. This dinner will feature a variety of Korean fair and seating is limited to 50. Price is $25 per person. You may make reservations by calling 253-3331.
