MENTZ - The town has appealed a decision that leaves it picking up 95 percent of costs to prop up the troubled Haiti Island Bridge. The appeal, filed with the Fourth Appellate Division of state Supreme Court in Rochester, contests a Dec. 13, 1996 decision by Cayuga County Judge Robert A. Contiguglia. In his decision Contiguglia upheld a Sept. 18, 1996 resolution by the county Legislature dividing responsibility for the bridge: 95 percent to Mentz and 5 percent to the town Conquest. The Legislature's resolution also left Mentz responsible for ice and snow removal and absolved Conquest of any financial responsibility resulting from the collapse of the bridge in November, 1990.

PORT BYRON - When you meet Carol Waterman, she seems pleasant, even jovial. You'd never know she loves to scare the wits out of people. Waterman and her husband, Cyrus, own Joyful Acres, a strange name for a “field of screams.” For three weekends in October, the Watermans create a horror-filled Halloween extravaganza in their year-round corn maze. The nice part about being scared at Joyful Acres is that the money you pay is donated to area non-profit organizations.
