Bar owners should show neighbors some respect

Wednesday, October 10, 2007 11:49 AM EDT

This letter is directed at those who have expressed an opinion concerning my presentation at the City Council meeting last Thursday. I have had numerous conversations with homeowners in our neighborhood. We are concerned with the vacant buildings, waist high grass, broken windows, glass and debris on the sidewalks, litter, gangs of teenagers hanging out on the corners fighting and swearing, standing in the middle of the road defying traffic to hit them. We are tired of loud music and obnoxious bar patrons.
When I purchased my home, bars did not have outside bands. This just started this summer. Imagine screaming guitars and screaming drunken patrons, imagine closing your doors and windows in the middle of the summer just to hear your television set. Imagine going to bed to be awakened by individuals fighting, swearing, urinating, and vomiting in the street or right in your front yard. Imagine having your children or grandchildren awakened by this noise.

I have no problem with bar owners making a living, however, they also have a responsibility to the neighborhood. They have a responsibility to be good neighbors. If they cannot meet this obligation then their permits should be rescinded.

Furthermore 10 p.m. is too late for outside bands. When live bands perform at Hoopes Park, are they allowed to play until 10 p.m.? Are the people who attend events at Hoopes Park respectful of the neighborhood and other people's property?

All we want is the same courtesy. We have invested thousands into our homes, we want a respectful neighborhood. We want to be able to sit on our porches and enjoy the summer evenings without gangs of out of control teenagers, drunken patrons, and litter and debris ruining our property and our neighborhood. We are not looking for special treatment, just some consideration.

" Bars do not belong in residential neighborhoods PERIOD. Speaking as a neighbor of a bar, I, too, have endured all the horrors described by Jerry Morgan AND SO MUCH MORE! (Car stolen and totalled, house broken into on more than one occasion, etc). The APD is #1 on my speed dial - I have learned not to hold my breath! It's wonderful having drunks wandering around your neighborhood at 2am still looking to party. mickeymch - an occasional backyard celebration is WAAYYYY different than a bunch of strangers disrespecting your privacy and property every night - but, same rules apply in either situation. Hey Jerry - I know your pain! "

" Personally I wouldnt have a problem with a live band if it was once or 2ce thru the summer. BUT if it was every weekend-thats a whole new story! If young teens know there is a live band they will hang out-someone older will have allready purchased them beer/or serve them on the sly. The neighbors and the bar should sit down with a mediator and try to resolve this-so as all can enjoy the summer! The good news Jerry is that the snow is coming-and all will be quiet for several months! "

" Gosh, as much as I don't think too highly of Mr Morgan here, I have to agree with him. Loud neighbors are the SHITE! Worse yet when they're drunk! "

" I'd always thought there was a noise ordinance that restricted the amount of noise coming from any home or establishment after 10pm (depending on the area) anyhow, but I could be wrong. If it's that loud, call the police. It's not unheard of for a bar to have its entertainment shut down for the night because of the noise level. Use bear traps or tiger pits for the teenagers, that'll learn'em! ;-) "

" 10 pm for a outside band to play, is too late. Some people have to work weekends. Move it inside, simple. "

" So what you saying is when 2 or more teenagers assemble it is a gang? But of course when "adults" assemble they are quiet, respectful, and decent. What a diluted statement. Realize that not everyone should have to miss out on music and fun because you want to go to bed at 10 pm. Lighten up and live life a little. "

" I don't think he tried to tie teens in with the bar problems. He was just listing issues in the area collectively. "

" What do gangs of teenagers have to do with bars? Presumably, no one under 21 is allowed at a bar, inside or outside. Rescinding the bars' permits is not going to do anything about teenagers hanging around. I do not believe 10 p.m. is too late for an outside band. Would you apply the same standard to a personal party -- if you have a backyard celebration this summer, with music, do you think your neighbors should be able to shut you down at 10 p.m. It's the shank of the evening!
