Best advice: Don't smoke or drink; stay active
Each Tuesday, The Citizen features a health professional from the
Finger Lakes community in The Banks: This week, we spotlight Deanna Hoey, who works as a public health educator for the county's health department.
Q. What is the most rewarding part of your job?
A. Working with the public and helping others.
Q. What is the most challenging?
A. Staying up to date with all the different information that comes out regarding different health topics.
Q. Describe your ideal client.
A. Someone that complies. We advise them and hope that they would follow through, that they are willing to seek services and to call and ask questions.
Q. When you're sick, would you want someone like you to be your doctor?
A. Yes. I'm easy to talk to, I'm understanding and I take the time to listen.
Q. What is the best piece of advice you could give someone to stay healthy?
A. Don't smoke or drink. Stay active and seek medical attention early if you have a problem, before it develops into something worse.
Q. What's the most common misconception you hear from clients?
A. It's not really a misconception, but a lot of people postpone going to the doctor's office. They'll wait until the problem is too bad. Usually they only worry about their health when they have a problem.
Q. For someone considering a career like yours, what advice would you offer?
A. Be open to change, have good communication skills, stay current with issues and be willing to help others. You have to be a kind of detective at this job, sometimes they don't know the answer and you have to find it.
Q. What's your ideal cure for the common cold?
A. When people feel they have it, they should stay home from work or school. It's so easily transmitted. You should also wash your hands and cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze. Use your elbow, not your hands.
Q. In your opinion, which medical TV show is most realistic? Which is your favorite?
A. “Grey's Anatomy” is my favorite, but it's not very realistic. “Untold Stories of the ER” on The Learning Channel is the most realistic because they show real stories.
Q. Despite being in the health care field, people would probably be surprised that when I'm off the job, I _________.
A. Have a sweet tooth for candy.
