Flu shots distributed for community
Regional Medical Services will offer flu shots for seniors. Seniors must bring their Medicare Cards to the clinic.

For those covered by Medicare B, the immunizations are billed at no cost to Medicare. For those not covered by Medicare, a flu shot is $30 and Pneumonia is $45. Anyone belonging to a Medicare HMO must pay for the vaccine at the clinic and will be given an insurance form to submit to your HMO or other insurance carrier.

Long-term care seminar to be held

A free unbiased long-term care insurance information seminar will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, at the Boyle Senior Center, 149 Genesee St., Auburn.

Class for lifeguard certification starting

The YMCA-WEIU will hold a Lifeguard Certification class Friday, Oct. 12, through Oct 21, at 27 William St., Auburn. Attendees will receive the training required to become a certified lifeguard and to become employed as a lifeguard.

CPR/AED, First Aid and Oxygen certifications are required and are also offered by the YMCA.

Candidates must be 16 years old and pass a swimming pre-test. For further information, call 253-5304.

Carol Baldwin to speak at AMH

Carol M. Baldwin, chairperson of the board of the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund, Inc., will serve as keynote speaker of the annual women's health institute, “Our Mothers, Our Daughters, Our Health,” sponsored by Auburn Memorial Hospital from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at the Auburn Holiday Inn.

Women get pampered at health event

All women ages 30+ who live in the area of northern Cayuga and western Onondaga counties are invited to participate in “Pamper Yourself, Pamper Your Health,” a health and beauty event, to be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 27, at Weedsport Jr.-Sr. High School.

Provided health care services at no charge include: blood pressure checks, diabetes screening, clinical breast exams, colon cancer test kits, and information on women's health. Pampering and child care will also be available.

Cancer support group to meet

WeCAre, a cancer support group, will hold its next meeting from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, at the First Presbyterian Church, 97 E. Genesee Street, Skaneateles, in the Connor Room. Parking is available.

Drive to provide needed ‘apple' a day

An apple a day keeps the doctor away or so the American Red Cross will try to prove between 11:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, at the First United Methodist Church, 99 South St., Auburn, when it hopes to collect 100 units of blood.

Donors may enjoy a slice of apple pie and, perhaps, win an Apple iPHONE and six months of basic service. Donors must collect a “Points for Pints” scratch-off card at the canteen and go on-line to enter the contest.

Donors must be 17 years or older, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good general health the day of the drive.

Support group scheduled to meet

The Office for the Aging's Alzheimer's Community Service Program offers a support group for caregivers providing care to Alzheimer's and other dementia's such as Parkinson's disease, Picks disease and other memory loss diagnosis.

The group meets at 4:30 p.m. the third Thursday of every month, at the Christ United Methodist Church on Congress Street in Moravia. The next meeting will be held Oct. 18.

Become a certified personal trainer

A personal trainer certification workshop will be held at 8 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 20 and 21, at the Cortland YWCA, 14 Clayton Ave., Cortland. These workshops are sponsored by the Cortland YWCA and the National Exercise Trainers Association (NETA), a non-profit fitness professional association.

This two-day workshop will include demonstrations and practical application of one-on-one training. NETA's expert trainer will cover exercise science review, communication skills, exercise programming, health assessments and more.

The workshop registration includes written exam, two-year certificate and membership.

Psychics, holistic health featured

The Cortland Psychic Fair and Holistic Living Expo will be held from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, and from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, at the Ramada Inn (former Holiday Inn) 2 River St., Cortland.

The expo will feature 12 renowned psychics and readers, holistic practitioners, herbalists, New Age and alternative health vendors, lecturers and entertainment by Merry Mischief (Saturday) and Gypsy Red (Sunday).

Admission is $6, and attendees are asked to bring a non-perishable food item to benefit the Cortland County Nutrition Program, Cortland Helping Hands Food Pantry.
