The Rev. Nacca will be missed by all who knew him

Monday, October 8, 2007 9:53 AM EDT

While the Auburn community gathered Sunday to celebrate the 100th anniversary of St. Francis of Assisi Church, we sadly learned that our beloved priest, the Rev. John J. Nacca, had passed the night before. On Saturday, as Father Nacca received the last rites of the church and his life drew to a close, those of us who knew him knew that his spirit would remain strong and vibrant and would always be a part of our memories of St. Francis of Assisi Church.
Sunday's sunshine was undoubtedly Father Nacca's spirit shining down on the church and congregation he so dearly loved. He touched the lives of so many people in the Auburn community, as well as many people throughout the country and world. A true giant has passed.

Father Nacca served as pastor at St. Francis from 1949 to 1985. During my service in the New York State Assembly, I invited Father Nacca to travel to Albany to serve as an honorary chaplain for a day. After he delivered that day's opening prayer in the New York State Assembly chamber, it was with great pride that I brought Father Nacca around to meet other members of the Assembly, who immediately loved the quick-witted, generous and caring man.

Father Nacca had a tremendous influence on my life and meant a great deal to me. He was a true shepherd of the church and was an inspiration to myself along with many, many others. He will be missed by us all.
