A reported explosion on Owasco Lake caused a motorboat to sink and injured a passenger Saturday afternoon.
At 2:13 p.m., the Cayuga County Sheriff's Office received a call that an explosion occurred at the southern end of the lake. According to sheriff's officials, an inboard-motor boat carrying a 27-year-old male and 18-year-old female sank as a result of the incident.
The woman, who officials said is from Marathon, sustained minor lacerations and some internal injuries, according to the sheriff's office. The man, who was said to be from Cincinnatus, was not injured.
Officials have not determined whether the incident was caused by an engine malfunction or some sort of collision. No other craft was involved in the incident and the sheriff's office said that there was no reason to believe alcohol or drugs were a factor.
The remains of the boat were not yet recovered as of Monday afternoon, and the state DEC has been notified, officials said.
According to the sheriff's office, nearby witnesses assisted the boaters before rescue workers arrived and the woman's injuries were treated at Auburn Memorial Hospital.
