A single-vehicle crash east of Auburn resulted in one fatality and the closure of a portion of Franklin Street Road Monday afternoon.
According to Cayuga County Sheriff's officials, a dump truck was heading west on Franklin Street Road between Auburn and Skaneateles when the vehicle went into a ditch on the southbound side of the road and rolled onto its side at about 3:39 p.m. The driver of the truck, who was described as a man in his early 40s, was dead when officials arrived, according to Sheriff David Gould.
The driver's name has not yet been released, pending notification of family. However, the vehicle was identified as a Robinson Concrete truck carrying sand or fine dirt.
No other vehicles or individuals were involved in the incident, Sheriff's officials said.
The stretch of Franklin Street Road between Swamp Road and Cherry Road was still closed as of 6 p.m.
Witnesses reported that the truck was not traveling much faster than 35 or 40 mph when it swerved. Gould described the cause of the accident as "unknown" Monday afternoon, but said evidence of a medical condition contributing to the crash "may be obtained in the future."
