Cayuga County will have its first low-cost spay and neuter clinic for dogs, cats, puppies and kittens belonging to low-income individuals starting Friday, Oct. 12.
According to Carol Russell, executive director of the Finger Lakes SPCA of Central New York, the clinic is a partnership between Shelter Outreach Services (SOS) and the FLSPCA-CNY. Both organizations are nonprofits.

SOS has been operating in the Finger Lakes region for four years and is now working with every SPCA, humane society and rescue group in the area. To date some 22,000 dogs and cats have been sterilized through the partnership of these organizations.

The clinics will be held at the Plant and Animal Life Studies area on the new BOCES campus on the second Friday of each month. For further information and to schedule an appointment, call the FLSPCA-CNY at 253-5841.

Income eligibility is determined by receipt of one of the following: food stamps, HEAP, Child and Family Health Plus, Medicaid, SSI, Social Security Disability, temporary housing assistance or other government program.

Caretakers of feral, stray or barn cats are also eligible and are not required to meet income eligibility.

The clinics will do pediatric spay and neuter surgeries which means that kittens and puppies can be done as early as 8 weeks of age. Such early procedures are expected to reduce even further many unwanted pregnancies, which occur when pets and strays are erroneously thought not to be of age to reproduce until they are over 6 months old.

The clinics will also be available to income eligible persons in nearby counties.

The $20 spay/neuter voucher system is also available to income eligible individuals by calling (888) 669-0870 and requesting an application.

Feral and stray cats are a community generated problem, one that we all can help solve by spaying and neutering our pets and pitching in to pay for the surgery of those cats and dogs that have been abandoned by their owners.

The FLSPCA-CNY will gratefully accept donations to a fund that will subsidize the surgery of feral cat colonies.
