Last week my husband and I were privileged to attend the SCAT Van Volunteer Recognition Dinner. This was our first time among the many volunteers who have given an awesome amount of years and time. They are truly to be admired and we thank director Kathy Shutter and dispatcher Donna Wilson for the great job they are doing. We have just started driving and escorting this summer, and I can honestly say that it is one of the most enjoyable volunteer activities we have ever participated in.
It not only serves a population of people who would be homebound or greatly limited, but it has made us some very good friends. It has also made us admire the spunk and determination of some of the elderly folks we transport. And it's only one day a week. (Or as many as anyone wants to volunteer).
Many of these volunteers are like us - retired - and soon on their way to southern climates. There is a real need for substitute drivers, or the routes go unfilled, and the people who depend on the transportation are truly homebound. The SCAT Van has stations originating in Auburn, Cato, Union Springs and Moravia. Try it, you'll like it.
Again, many thanks and appreciation to the SCAT Van organizers for a great volunteer opportunity.
