State board denies tribe liquor licenses

The Associated Press
VERONA, N.Y. - The state Liquor Authority says it will not issue liquor licenses to the Oneida Indian Nation.

After delaying a decision for a month, the liquor board says it cannot issue permits to the Oneidas while unsettled sovereignty issues between the tribe and the state are being litigated in court.

The Oneidas are seeking liquor licenses for their six golf-related properties at the tribe's Turning Stone Casino and Resort complex in Verona.

The board says the Oneidas can reapply for licenses again in the future if the sovereignty issues are resolved.

The decision also leaves in doubt the tribe's applications for liquor licenses for its new night club and its hotels.
