Apple Festival starts this weekend
The 35th annual LaFayette Apple Festival will be held from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7, at the festival grounds, exit 15 off Route 81 in LaFayette.
The festival is regarded as one of the most widely attended events in central New York. It offers a wide variety of apples and cider, unique crafts, carnival rides, entertainment, flu shots and a scarecrow contest.
Parking is free, and the entrance fee is $4 per person; children under 12 are free.
Elks Lodge to host Polish night dinner
A Polish night dinner will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, at the Auburn Elks Lodge No. 474, 314 State St., Auburn. The dinner is $8.

Heritage Society to host dinner
The Italian Heritage Society will honor distinguished local people at the Christopher Columbus Recognition Dinner at 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7, at the Holiday Inn, 75 North Street, Auburn. Sen. Michael Nozzolio will be the keynote speaker, and Congressman Michael A. Arcuri will be a special guest.
The distinguished honorees include the Honorable Judge Thomas Leone, Dr. Henry J. Romano, M.D., Anthony Tesoro and Livia Falcicchio. Music will be provided for listening and dancing.
Tickets may be purchased at Paul's Barber Shop, Tesoros Apparel, Sam's Shoe Store, Speno Music or Lewis Restaurant.
Church to host old fashioned dinner
The United Church of Genoa will host an old-fashioned turkey dinner with all the trimmings from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 8, at the church, Route 90, Genoa.
The dinner is $7.50 for adults, $3.50 for children 5 to 12 and free for children younger than 5. Take-outs are also available.

St. Mary's to hold annual pasta dinner
St. Mary's Church of Auburn will hold its monthly pasta dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, in Schrader Hall, 15 Clark St., Auburn.
The menu includes pasta, meatballs and sauce, salad and dressing, Italian bread, dessert and beverages. Tickets must be purchased at the door. Cost for adults is $6 and $4 for children younger than 12. Take-outs are available.

Nature center hosts apple cider pressing
Visitors are invited to help in creating apple cider the old fashioned way using a people powered fruit press from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at the Sterling Nature Center, 15730 Jensvold Road, Sterling. Attendees will help wash, grind, press, pasteurize and best of all taste fresh apple cider.
While going through this process, the center will discuss the history of apples, apple product, the apple growing industry and the many different varieties of apples.
New this year, visitors may taste test more than a dozen different varieties of apples grown by local orchards and vote for their favorite.
