ALBANY - The New York attorney general is reviewing the Rev. Al Sharpton's National Action Network because the charity has fallen behind in filing financial reports.
The New York Post first reported that the organization has not provided Attorney General Andrew Cuomo's charity bureau with information about its income, expenses and executive salaries.

The agency fell behind sometime in 2003 when an electrical fire destroyed most of their files, said Charlie King, the acting national director of the network.

But the National Action Network alerted the attorney general's office to the problem before Cuomo took office in January, Sharpton said. The Harlem-based activist group is working with Cuomo's office to resolve the issue.

“We had that understanding months ago,” Sharpton said. “We've been dealing with this.”

It has taken accountants time to reconstruct financial materials and it must be done in sequential order - slowing down the process, King said.

Cuomo has been a Sharpton ally in the past. He donated $10,000 to the network last year.

Sharpton then endorsed Cuomo after Charlie King dropped out of the race.

King worked for Cuomo in the late 1990s at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. When Cuomo unsuccessfully ran for governor in 2002, King ran as his lieutenant governor.

“The Attorney General's office is currently reviewing the matter and the organization is working to bring their filings up to date,” Cuomo spokesman Jeffrey Lerner said.
