Shear volume of patients worth it once they smile
Each Tuesday, The Citizen features a health professional from the
Finger Lakes community in The Banks: This week, we spotlight nurse Janet Cole.
Q. What is the most rewarding part of your job?
A. Seeing the patients smile after I've cared for and treated them.
Q. What is the most challenging?
A. The volume of patients we see.
Q. Describe your ideal patient.
A. A patient that has an understanding of their own health, which makes my job easier to help them when they're ill.
Q. When you're sick, would you want someone like you to be your doctor?
A. I would hope so, I take pride in trying to be thorough and listen to what patients are saying, and that helps me meet their needs better.
Q. What is the best piece of advice you could give someone to stay healthy?
A. Get plenty of rest, drink lots of fluids and stay away from people that are ill.
Q. What's the most common misconception you hear from patients?
A. That they need to take antibiotics for everything.
Q. If you weren't in the health care field, what career or field would you do?
A. Teaching, actually, I am a teacher. I teach a nursing program at Cayuga Community College.
Q. For someone considering a career like yours, what advice would you offer?
A. That they know what they are getting into, not everyone can just go into health care.
Q. What's your ideal cure for the common cold?
A. Drink lots of fluids and stay away from other people with colds. Also, get vitamin C.
Q. In your opinion, which medical TV show is most realistic? Which is your favorite?
A. The most realistic is “ER;” it's based on my experience in the emergency room. I see much of what's done in that environment to be pretty accurate. But I like “Grey's Anatomy” most; it's entertaining.
Q. Despite being in the health care field, people would probably be surprised that when I'm off the job, I _________.
A. Relax by playing with my grandson and working in my garden. And I read nursing articles to keep
current.
