This past summer, about a thousand inmates of the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Centre in the Philippines staggered into the hearts of YouTube audiences with a well-staged version of Michael Jackson's “Thriller.”

This weekend, Auburn High School's Maroon Vanguard marching band hopes to do the same during the annual Harvest of Sound show at Holland Stadium.
Band director Ed Meier has choreographed part of his 120 musicians' performance to Jackson's iconic zombie march, in addition to Bach's “Toccata and Fugue” and a few other spooky songs.
“I just thought it'd be a fun show to do,” Meier said. “I've always wanted to do a theme like this.”
Meier has thought outside the box for marching band inspiration in the past. The Vanguard has performed rock music, show tunes and movie soundtrack songs at past Harvests.
This year's 15-minute performance, called “The Horror Show,” will be sprinkled with sinister sound effects like creaking doors and screams. The Auburn players will wear “zombiefied” black jumpsuits with masks to look the part as well.
“It's 50 percent visual, 50 percent music,” Meier said.
Judges will evaluate each band by its choreography, drill design, band movement, marching style and the quality of the music. The overall effect on the crowd is another consideration.
This year's Harvest of Sound will feature marching bands from Union-Endicott, Greece, Vestal, Baldwinsville, Central Square, Horseheads, East Irondequoit, Phoenix, Norwich and Auburn.
Between the 10 bands, four -including Auburn - represent the Large School Division 3, three represent Large School Division 2 and two represent Small School Division 1.
“Sometimes we go to shows and we're the only band in our division,” Meier said.
With three bands serving as their competition, the Maroon Vanguard will be sure to scare more than just the audience.
