NEW YORK - Senator Charles Schumer says some New York telephone number listings on the National Do Not Call Registry are set to expire, leaving thousands of people vulnerable to annoying telemarketers.
The registry was created in 2003 and allows people to prevent telemarketers from calling their homes and businesses to solicit.

Schumer says listings on the registry expire after five years and the first wave of expirations will occur next June.

He has announced legislation to amend the registry and prevent phone number listings from expiring.

He says the Do Not Call list has almost 3 million phone numbers from New York City and 1.7 million from Long Island.
