Blue Devils step up defensively, pick up third straight win

MORAVIA - The game wasn't as close as the score indicated, but the Moravia football team held on with under three minutes left to earn its third straight win.
The Blue Devils' pulled their record over .500 with a 28-25 win over Newfield on Saturday.

The defense made an incredible stop when Newfield attempted a run on a 4th-and-1 play at midfield. Several Blue Devils stopped the Trojans behind the line of scrimmage with about three minutes left in the game. Soon after, Moravia had their own 4th-and-inches play and JJ Weeks ran five yards to allow Moravia to run out the clock.

“This was a really emotional game, with it being our homecoming game and they had lost two straight coming in after making the playoffs the last two seasons,” Moravia coach John Crossgrove said. “We had some big guys come up real big for us in the end.”

Evy Thompson ran 29 times for 187 yards to propel the ground game. Jeremy Stewart rushed 16 times for 69 more yards and two touchdowns. TJ Powers had a nice day in the air, going 6-10 for 127 yards and a score. Taylor Mackey caught four of those balls for 66 yards.

Logan Crandall led the team with 12 tackles and Joe Corson had nine.

BOYS SOCCER

Southern Cayuga 5, Union Springs 0

Tony Brown-Rejman scored twice and assisted on an Andrew Dean goal to lead the Chiefs.

Southern Cayuga was up 3-0 at the half after Jason Herford scored an unassisted goal to start the game and Brown-Rejman scored on a pass from Bill Rejman to conclude the half.

An unassisted Brown-Rejman goal kicked off the second half and Adam Mandel scored on a penalty kick to finish the game. Union Springs had 10 shots to the Chiefs' 15. Southern Cayuga had the advantage in corner kicks as well, 5-3.

Southern Cayuga goalies combined on six saves, while Rob Ferro made eight grabs for the Wolves.

The Chiefs (8-2-1) host Newfield on Monday.

Moravia 2, DeRuyter 1

At half the score was 2-1 and Moravia's two goals came by captain Justin Stanton, while the two assists came by co-captain Mike Drake. Moravia's goalie A.J Rouse gave up one goal and had 19 saves in the team's homecoming game.

“Our entire team played a great game. This win was desperately needed, and they showed great team spirit.” Moravia coach James Myers said.

Moravia ( 2-8-2 ) hosts Union Springs on Monday.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Tully Invitational

The Panthers placed eighth out of 29 teams. Christian Cobb placed 14th (18:23), Eric Urwin took 49th (23:16), Zac Leja came in 50th (23:30), and Tyler Wellington finished 52nd (23:52).

Port Byron hosts Cato-Meridian this Wednesday.

Southern Springs placed fourth in the A/B race. They were led by Evan Bassett sixth (18:37), Alex Schmitt ninth (18:53), Corey Field came in 18th (19:20), Matt Cuff finished 22nd (19:32), and Marshall Greer finished 31st (20:10).

“The boys ran a solid race. Excellent effort by Alex.” Southern Springs coach Bill Mullarney said.

The team hosts Groton, Marathon, Waverly on Tuesday

McQuaid Invitational

Moravia's Jason Phillips finished ninth (16:55) in the smaller division of the McQuaid Invitational.

“Another good race by Jason. Competitive race of over 200 competitors.” Moravia coach Jan Hunsinger said.

Joe Grobelny placed 30th (17:45 ), and Adam Wiethuechter also ran well with a time of 21:19.

The Blue Devils' next meet is Tuesday at Lansing.

Cato-Meridian finished 29th out of 35 teams. Joey Mattice came in 88th (18:35), Tommy Klaben finished 100th (18:40), Denzer Campbell placed 154th (19:36), Timothy Nervina took 198th (20:41), Larry Treasure came in 199th (20:48), Andy Wegman placed 207th (21:07), and Joe Barbato finished 216 (21:44).

Cato-Meridian travels to Port Byron on Wednesday.

Skaneateles placed 16th out of 18 teams in the invitational. Sam Smolenski finished 17th ( 16:20 ), Calvin Davis took 29th (16:45), Matt Parker came in 68th (17:47), Josh Youle finished 104th (18:55), and Luke Edson took 123rd (20:45).

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Tully Invitational

Port Byron placed fifth out of 29 teams. Katie Wyckoff finished in 13th (23:16), Felicia Darrow placed 14th (23:17), and Amanda Vitale came in 19th (24:44).

Southern Springs ran an incomplete team. Mary Miller finished 27th (23:28), Michelle Wilmot came in 31st (24:01), Molly O'Hara finished 37th (26:01), and Stacy Rindfleisch took 47th (29:28).

McQuaid Invitational

Weedsport placed 14th out of 18 teams in the McQuaid Invitational. Alyssa O' Bryan placed 51st (21:03), Erin Daly took 59th (21:17), Ashley Edmunds came in 78th (22:19), Nicole Greer finished 80th (22:21), and Michelle Donahue placed 86th (22:31).

The Blue Devils' Alicia McLaughlin came in 43rd (21:40), Jessica Higgins finished 98th (23:26), Helen Hunsinger finished in 175th place (26:11), Aimee Glenister came in 184th (25:29), and Kayla Slater placed 185th (26:30).

Cato-Meridian placed 24th out of 30. Aubrey Campbell led the Blue Devils in 88th place (22:23), Kristen Roberts finished 111th (22:51), Jessica Cushman placed 145th (23:44), Angelina Argese came in 157th (23:54), Erin Annett took 168th (24:13), and Amber McClain finished 220th (25:53) out of 243 girls that participated in the event.

Skaneateles took home fifth in the tournament. Leading the way for the Lakers was Rachel Hosie in eighth place (18:57), Alexis Mazzeo took 29th (20:19), Kristen Roberts finished 32nd ( 20:25 ), Christinia Homeyer came in 36th place (20:32), and Bea Walton placed 65th (21:28).
