POPLAR RIDGE - To a soccer novice, the two-goal lead that Union Springs had over Southern Cayuga at halftime on Saturday looked pretty promising.

But Wolves' coach Corinne Bowman knew the Chiefs could give her squad trouble.

“A two-goal lead is the most dangerous lead,” she said. “You think you're above and beyond but you're not.”

The Chiefs' Megan Lawrence seemed to know her team wasn't out of it, scoring early in the second half. But Union Springs rebounded, scoring twice for the 4-2 win to spoil Southern Cayuga's homecoming.

“Union Springs is an extremely good team,” said Chiefs' coach Bob Kalweit. “They're strong at every position. They were able to get some kids open today.”

The Wolves took control early on, when Michaela Hares found Alyssa Dean just over 16 minutes in. Kati Stolz scored the first of her two goals at the 17:52 mark in a scramble in front of the goal.

Stolz's goal was the last time the Wolves would find the net in the first half. The Chiefs stated to break up the Wolves' crosses to gain possession. Southern Cayuga took control, firing several shots at goalie Deven Gary, who had three saves. However, Gary played aggressively to keep the Chiefs off the board.

“We had a little bit of a let down today,” Bowman said, noting that she was confident that the Wolves would keep the lead. “We took a nap - but we woke up.”

Union Springs came back to life after Lawrence beat Gary with 33:59 left to go in regulation. Dean scored again on a breakaway minutes later, and Stolz increased the Wolves' lead to 4-1 at the 14:41 mark.

The Chiefs weren't done, with a last gasp when Lianna May successfully converted on a penalty kick with less than a minute left.

“They've always been that type of team, even since I've been playing,” said Bowman, who led the Wolves to a Section IV title in the late 90s. “They just don't quit.”

Union Springs led in shots, 18-5, and corners, 3-2.

Felicia Allen and Ashley Bergenstock combined for eight saves in goal.

Southern Cayuga (3-9) is at Spencer-Van Etten on Wednesday, while Union Springs (5-0, 8-3) hosts Newfield on Tuesday.

“I have a lot of respect for that team, they know how to play the game,” Kalweit said. “They're well coached - they should go a long way in sectionals.”
