Artist opening, fundraiser Oct. 5
An artist opening and fundraiser will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, at Skaneateles Artisans, 11 Fennell St., Skaneateles. A new exhibit featuring artists Roscha Folger (multimedia paintings in watercolor and pastel), Ruth Orvis (new line of colorful hand-dyed yarns and sweaters made from it) and Carol Hill (three-dimensional paintings) will go on display.

The gallery will also exhibit and hold a silent auction of member-created holiday bags, with all proceeds donated to a charitable cause.

The show and silent auction run until Oct. 19. Off-street parking is available.

Reception to be held for artists' opening

An opening reception for two artists will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, at Grove Gallery in Aurora. The opening is free and open to the public.

The exhibits will run concurrently from Oct. 5 through Nov. 1 and feature the work of Karen Thomas-Lillie and John Dargan.

Thomas-Lillie uses oilbar to create atmospheric landscapes in which the lines between land, water and sky are blurred. British artist Dargan examines structures and spaces that humans create and inhabit in his small oil painting.

The gallery is located at 347 Main St., Aurora, and is open from noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays from Oct. 1 through Dec. 24. For more information, contact Anna Baxter at 364-7472 or e-mail anna@groveaurora.com.

Historical society to host discussion

The Montezuma Historical Society will host a talk given by Laurel Auchampaugh, town of Owasco historian, and her daughter, Lynne Stenburg, at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7, at the Historic Mentz Church, Mentz Church and McDonald Roads in Montezuma.

The pair will present research done on 19th century and earlier gravestones, which bear historically significant symbolism and progression of styles.

Following the gravestone art presentation, there will be a historical scavenger hunt in the cemetery to search out clues found carved on headstones to learn more about the early settlers of the church. Doughnuts and cider will be served.

Curley's patrons, staff going on trip

Curley's Restaurant is planning a trip to Niagara Falls next month.

A bus will leave at 9 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 14, from the restaurant, 96 State St., Auburn, and arrive in Canada approximately at noon for a day of adventure. The bus will depart Niagara Falls by 7:30 p.m. and arrive back in Auburn around 10 p.m.

Tickets are $40 per person and include round trip transfers, beverages and an all you can eat buffet in Niagara Falls at the Fallsview Casino.

Seats are limited, and all passengers must bring a birth certificate or passport.

Storycrafters return to art center

The Storycrafters will return to the Schweinfurth Art Center at 2 p.m. today, at 205 Genesee St., Auburn. The group, composed of Barry Marshall and Jeri Burns weaves together intricate and exciting tales, they strive to honor traditional cultures as they tell old stories in new ways often integrating indigenous musical instruments, songs and dances.

Librarian invites public for poetry

Visitors are invited to come and listen to the Seneca Falls Library children's librarian, Mary Catt, read poems at 9 a.m. Wednesday mornings, Oct. 3, 10 and 17, at the library, 47 Cayuga St., Seneca Falls.

Catt will be reading “Poems for Little People.” All pre-schoolers and family members are invited.

Authors to read excerpts at Wells

Authors Tina Post, Wells class of 1999, and Mark Temelko will read from their work at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, in the Art Exhibit Room, Macmillan Hall at Wells College in Aurora.

Post is co-founder and a former director of the Anchorage First Friday Reading Series. She has worked as the director of non-profit media and advocacy projects and is currently working as a writer for Wells. Temelko is a poet and currently an instructor of poetry at Wells College. He is the co-editor of Broadsided Press (broadsidedpress.org), an online and on-the-street press of poetry, short fiction, and visual art.

Script readings to open play season

The Armory Square Playhouse will open its 2007-2008 season with script-in-hand readings of three new plays in progress by Armory Square Playhouse members Peter Moller and Richard Harris and Kyle Bass at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30, at the Redhouse, 201 S. West St., Syracuse.

Back by popular demand are, “Script in Hand,” a short comedy written by Peter Moller, will be read. “Silent Prisoner,” a short play written by Richard Harris, and “Tender,” a one-act play written by Kyle Bass.

Seward House to host Sarah Vowell

The Seward House will host “An Evening with Sarah Vowell” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24, at the East Middle School Auditorium, 191 Franklin St., Auburn.

Vowell is the acclaimed author of four best-selling books, a contributing editor for public radio's “This American Life” and the voice of teen superhero Violet Parr in Pixar's “The Incredibles.”

Tickets are $15 general admission; $12 for students with ID and for Circle of Friends members.
