Auburn needs to invest in saving the Schine Theater

Friday, September 28, 2007 11:30 PM EDT

Don't give up on the potential good of restoring the Schine Theater! We all have great memories of before the mall, when single movie theaters dominated film.
Young people are very interested in how the past performed and played out.

The city should incorporate the Schine Theater into their downtown growth, give people a reason to be downtown. If you politicians stop to think you may be able to use events, meetings with film, possible film from Auburn's past leaders and great politicians to get downtown going.

The rest of the old theaters are gone by the way of the wrecking ball. Please give it some thought.

" How can we live if Wegmans does not expand? Let's plow down our history and an oppurtunity to renew our downtown so that Wegman's can expand the deli and beer departments. "

" How many years has it been since Wegmans wanted to expand on that property? Too many years and still nothing. "

" I am happy to see the Schine is finally getting attention. I saw my first movie there in 1954-The Wizard of Oz-, I got my first kiss there during Ben Hur, I used to watch movies in the projection booth with Jim Galley. I have many fond memories of it. The Schine is a treasure. It is, or was, a shining example of art deco. The fund raisers are good, but I hope other avenues of revenues are persued, eg: National endowment of the Arts, Film Societies, Architectural grants, etc. Hell, the Baldwins are pretty close to local. Perhaps they could be persuaded to raise funds. Alec could use the good press. Has anyone looked into the possibility of a film festival or two. Auburn is the home of sound on film. A musical film festival would be appropriate. An African-American film festival in honor of Harriet Tubman would be a badge of honor for Auburn. You'd have to build hotels. The point is that the Schine is a treasure that is being wasted. I am happy to see that finally attention is being paid. "

" In case you have been away, you may want to know that a lot of work has been done and a lot of money invested. I don't think they will give up at this point. "
