In the end, CBA defeated Skaneateles 107-74.
“Overall I think we swam very well,” Lakers coach Jill King said. “We know that CBA is a class A school, but they always come here to compete and they make us swim well against them.”
Skaneateles' record currently stands at 2-2 after Thursday's meet as the Lakers in the midst of a rebuilding season, but as far as King is concerned they are right on target.
“I graduated 13 seniors,” King said. “We're a young team, but we are a team that has a lot of potential and they motivate each other well. I'm excited about all the potential we have. We are right on track and we are swimming better times.”
Skaneateles had several standout performances, after earning several third place finishes with Kate Menapace, Britton Weber, Kylie Becker and Jackie Thompson getting a 2:06.64 in the 200 medley relay, Sarah Sawyer getting as 2:10.92 in the 200 freestyle and Britton Weber taking third with a 2:36.01 in the 200 individual medley.
Skaneateles began to have a strong showing when Kelly Dove racked up 145.15 point during the diving competition.
After the diving break Skaneateles took another third-place finish in the 100 butterfly with Kate Menapace's 1:12.19.
In the 100 freestyle, Skaneateles first began to show just what they had when Kiley Becker took first place with a 58.20.
“She was absolutely fabulous,” King said. “She got a personal best with that time and she is a sophomore. That was a really standout performance.” Skaneateles earned three more third-place finishes with Sarah Sawyer's 5:53.10 in the 500 freestyle, also a personal best time.
“Last year my 500 sectional time was 6:01,” King said. “Now with the 5:53 she beat her sectional time by almost six seconds. I couldn't be happier with her performance.”
Gaelyn Price, Sarah Sawyer, Jackie Thompson and Kylie Becker combined for a 1:52.29 in the 200 freestyle relay for a third-place finish.
The Lakers showed particular prowess on the 100 backstroke where Britton Weber (1:11.98), Bridget Clary (1:15.37) and Keri Steves (1:19.90) took first, second and third place, respectively.
Skaneateles had two more strong performances in the 100 breaststroke with Kiley Becker taking first place with a 1:15.09 and Jackie Thompson taking third with a 1:18.75.
And in the final event, the 400 free relay, Skaneateles pulled out all they had to take first and second place.
Kate Menapace, Elisabeth Holbein, Sarah Sawyer and Britton Weber combined for a 4:08.21 first place finish and Bethany Wawro, Holly Ross, Jennifer Coffin and Rachel Dewitt combined for a second place finish with a 4:38.28.
With these strong performances, King was more than pleased with what she saw from her team.
“We're facing Mexico on Tuesday,” King said. “They are a great team. And they are looking to beat us, we beat them out last year and they didn't expect that. So it should be a good match, it should be really close. So we are just looking towards that and aiming to make sectionals again this year.”
