Opportunities await you and your family at Powers Library this season.
Friday morning preschool story hour has resumed for the school year. Preschool-age children and their care-givers are welcome to attend at 10 a.m. every Friday (except holidays), at the library, 29 Church St., Moravia. Experienced early-education teacher Mary Donovan reads aloud to the children in a lively, interactive style. She also engages the children in hands-on activities and crafts and consults with parents on book choices to take home.
It's a great way to introduce your young ones to the magic of reading, the lure of books and the possibilities open to them at the library.
Dinosaurs and sharks, oh my! Why do these critters hold such a powerful fascination for kids, who never seem to tire of looking at pictures of them and reading up on all the grisly facts? Ours is not to answer why, but to stock our library shelves with as many books on these monsters as possible.
The library recently added a number of titles that are sure to appeal to your young one, including a six-volume full-color series on “North American Dinosaurs” books on the whale shark, the hammerhead, sharks and rays, a tempting book titled, “What Do Sharks Eat for Dinner?,” and one that is sure to become a favorite, “Life-Size Sharks,” a large book with fold-outs that show you various sharks' open mouths in all their life-size glory. Check out those steak-knife-like teeth on the great white.
Just in time for the holidays, Powers Library is offering two sessions of a Holiday Ornament Beading class, with local Moravia artisan Jane Jayne. The classes will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday mornings on either Nov. 3 or 10. You may register for a class by phoning the library at 497-1955. Cost is $10 per registrant, a portion of which will be donated to the library.
This year, Jayne will lead participants in creating an intricate beaded overlay to grace a round glass ornament. The beads sparkle and shine, twinkling as your ornament sways and turns and reflects the color of your ornament in tiny prisms of the rainbow. Bring a large glass orb-type ornament of your choosing to class with you; other materials will be provided.
If you can thread a needle, you can make a beautiful beaded holiday ornament. And they make great gifts.
Speaking of gifts, here's an idea that lets you give twice by supporting your local library while purchasing holiday gifts for folks on your list: Powers Library has logo book bags for sale in an attractive burgundy color with white lettering. These lightweight, sturdy bags will carry your books and so much more, and at $7 a piece, they are an affordable and practical way to support your library while giving a gift that will be useful as well as attractive. One size fits all.
