Pelc, Fox lead Maroons to ninth straight victory

AUBURN - The Auburn girls soccer team made it nine wins in a row at Seward Elementary on Tuesday by defeating Oswego 2-1. Jordan Pelc scored a goal and assisted on the other, scored by Jennifer Fox.
Virginia Porten recorded six saves and Laura Taylor, Marissa Slayton and Flannery Nangle also played well.

The Maroons (9-0) host Baldwinsville on Thursday.

BOYS SOCCER

Candor 4, Southern Cayuga 3

With both teams holding identical 6-1-1 records going into the game, the play was nearly as even. Ed Richter had four saves as Candor had the edge in shots, 10-9.

Tyler Smith scored the first goal on a pass from Liam Trojner-Riley and Casey Underwood scored the second on a pass from Tony Brown-Rejman. Ryan Littlejohn scored the final goal, unassisted.

Trumansburg 2, Moravia 0

Trumansburg had the edge in shots 24-7, and corner kicks, 8-3. AJ Rouse had 16 saves and Dylan Turner had none in the second half.

The Blue Devils (1-8-2) host Dryden, Thursday.

SWIMMING

Auburn 49.5, Baldwinsville 42.5

In a match that was far closer than even the score, the Maroons maintained their flawless record by taking several events just one hundredth of a second before the Bees. In the opening event, the 200 medley relay, Kelsey Roe, Laura Iwanicki, Kiersten Salemi and Mallorie Dygert finished in first (2:01.12). Tiffany Kline, Makenzie Hauger, Kara Cunningham and Michaela Elliot came in third (2:09.44) in the four lane pool, just .05 ahead of the Bees.

In the 200 freestyle, Ashley King tied for first place (2:09.03) and Salemi won the 200 IM (2:31.19). Hueger took second in the event, just .07 ahead of Baldwinsville. Dygert came in second in the 50 freestyle (26.72).

Roe won the 100 butterfly (1:07.04), Dygert placed first in the 100 freestyle (57.93) and Ashley King won the 500 freestyle (5:48.10), ahead of Tracy Miller (6:04.02). Iwanicki, Kline, King and Dygert won the 200 freestyle relay (1:48.54) and Hueger, Molly Blair, Miller and Cunningham came in third (1:56.05), .03 seconds ahead of Baldwsinville to all but seal the meet. Roe won the backstroke (1:06.85), ahead of Salemi (1:09.57).

Auburn (6-0) hosts Nottingham on Friday.

Southern Springs 49, Waverly 45

In the 200 medley relay, Erin Weber, Sarah Kilser, Amber Heslop and Bekah Ortquist came in second (2:08.32). Ortquist finished second in the 200 IM (2:46.18) and first in the 100 freestyle (1:02.81), ahead of Stephanie Morse (1:03.14).

Kaitlin Rejman finished third in the 200 freestyle (2:32.08)., Morse was second in the 50 freestyle (28.29), Carly Pearson won the 100 butterfly (1:16.39) and Devin Balk was second in the 500 freestyle relay (7:02.89). Morgan Matzon, Rose Mandel, Elizabeth Tyrell and Pearson won the 200 freestyle relay (2:00.18). Weber finished second in the 100 backstroke (1:14.93) and Kathryn Carter won the 100 breaststroke (1:22.62). Pearson, Rejman, Ortquist and Morse won the 400 freestyle relay (4:13.98).

Southern Springs (2-2) hosts Watkins Glen on Thursday.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Newark Valley 20, Groton 80, Southern Springs 90, Moravia inc.

Jason Phillips continued his great week for Moravia, coming in third (17:28). Sophomore Joe Grobelny came in 12th (19:12) and Adam Wiethuechter finished 27th.

For Southern Springs, Alex Schmitt placed 14th (19:46), as did Corey Field with the same time. Matt Cuff finished 16th (20:02), JD Balloni was 22nd (21:12) and Zach Casper placed 23rd (21:27).

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Newark Valley 18, Southern Springs 54, Moravia inc., Groton inc.

Alicia McLaughlin came in fifth (23:27) for the Blue Devils, who finished incomplete due to team injuries. Jessica Higgins was 10th (26:04) and Claire Hunsinger finished 14th (26:49).

Mary Miller finished sixth (24:00) for Southern Springs. Michelle Wilmot was seventh (24:18), Jessica Lepianka came in 12th (26:37), Casey Emmett was 13th (26:40) and Sarah Norton placed 16th (31:48).

FIELD HOCKEY

Weedsport 5, Cato-Meridian 0

Chelsea Paquette had a hat trick for the Warriors, while Sharra Brentlinger scored the other two goals. Taylor Roe and Amy Sanchez each chipped in with an assist and Allison Beardsley had two assists. Kaitlin Hammersley played well in the net, but didn't record any saves.

Kelly Hunter had 10 grabs for the Blue Devils.

Weedsport (9-2) is at Cortland on Thursday.

Cortland 2, Port Byron 1, OT

Ashley Leja scored the lone goal for the Panthers in the first half off a Jamie Secor pass.

Julie Janusz recorded seven saves.

Port Byron (3-7-1) hosts Cazenovia on Thursday.

VOLLEYBALL

Utica Proctor 3, Auburn 1

Nicole Bozek had five aces in the 21-25, 7-25, 27-25, 16-25 loss.

Katie Brown had six kills and a block, Megan Cahill recorded four aces, three assists and one kill.

Emily Felter had one ace, one assist and five kills. Kaylee Hamberger had one ace and one kill, Julie Hirsch had one ace and one kill, Erica Quernes scored four assists and a kill and Danielle Ryan also had one kill.

Newfield 3, Union Springs 2

Jamie Pearce led the Wolves with two aces, seven kills and two blocks in the 6-25, 25-19, 17-25, 26-24, 16-25 loss.

Kelly Pinckney scored one ace and seven kills, Stephanie Huber had six assists and two digs and Kim Huber had three aces and four assists.

Union Springs is at Lansing on Thursday.

Dryden 3, Moravia 0

Gabe Chiddy scored two kills and a block in the 25-14, 25-13, 25-18 loss.

Brandi O'Hara recorded an ace, three assists, one kill and a block. McKenna Plumadore scored an ace and two kills.

Olivia Thompson led Dryden with 15 points, five aces, three kills.

Amy Storm had 11 points, nine assists.
