AUBURN - The Auburn Enlarged City School District has found a new assistant superintendent of personnel.
In an unanimous vote, the board of education voted Tuesday to name Jeffrey Pirozzolo as the next assistant superintendent.

“I'm very excited,” Pirozzolo said. “What I'm excited about is having more of a direct impact on all students here in Auburn and continue to support the staff,” so the district can “move forward with our graduation plan” and make sure every student is successful.

Pirozzolo was formerly an assistant principal at West Middle School. He became interim assistant superintendent when Joseph D. “J.D” Pabis became superintendent in July.

He will serve a three-year term. Terms of Pirozzolo's contract were not disclosed.

Several board members had nothing but positive things to say about Pirozzolo.

“He's energetic, he's upbeat,” said board member Mike Stearns. “Everything he's ever done and every time we've talked was about the kids.”

Board president David Lansford commented on Pirozzolo's dedication during the busy summer months to prepare for the school year.

In other news:

* The board voted unanimously to investigate the possibility of investing in a long-range capital project for technology upgrades, building upgrades, renovations to Holland Stadium and other athletic fields.

The district is currently in the midst of a $13 million capital project for technology and building upgrades to facilities. After earmarking the $13 million, the district discovered that they were short $700,000 for other priority items due to a 12 percent inflation rate, Stearns reported during an update on the last meeting of the Long Range Planning Committee. The items nixed from this year's capital project will be included in the potential capital project as high priorities.

In addition to those upgrades, the board is seeking additional information on athletic upgrades.

“It's not just about athletics,” said board member Sam Giangreco. “It's about education which is first and foremost in all of our minds.”

Lansford said he pushed for all athletic facilities to be included in the project to ensure all students benefited.

“To not only focus on the stadium is irresponsible,” he said. “We need to talk about all our fields.”

The vote passed on Tuesday only approves an investigation to see if launching a new capital project is possible. They will be meeting with architects and engineers among others to figure out what it is going to take to upgrade facilities. A resolution put out to the voters approving any capital project will likely not occur for another year, Lansford said.

* The next board meeting will be at 7 p.m., Oct. 9 at the Auburn High School library.
