Police looking into arson at tavern
Police are investigating an arson that occurred early Friday morning in front of Taylor's Tavern, 55 Washington Street, in Auburn.

At 1 a.m. Friday, someone ignited a potable sign made up of paper advertisements in front of the tavern, according to the Auburn Police Department. The fire was extinguished by an employee of the business, and no structures were damaged.

Police ask anyone with information about the incident to call 253-3235.

Bank to make donation to library program

Five Star Bank is donating $500 to the Dolly Parton Imagination Library Program at 5:30 p.m. today. The Success by 6 program in the E. John Gavras Center facilitates the program. The ceremony will take place at the bank, 345 Genesee St., in Auburn.

Nancy Tehan, of the Gavras Center, said the library will use the money to buy books, which are mailed to the participating children. All children who are younger than 5 and live in Cayuga County are eligible for the program.

Waterfowl ID classes to be held at MWC

Waterfowl identification courses are offered in the Montezuma Wetlands Complex. People will learn how to identify species through plumage patterns, silhouettes, flight, characteristics, call and the sound their wings make.

Organizers require participants to pre-register for the free courses. Those who take a waterfowl identification course can hunt waterfowl on the refuge. Refuge regulations and maps are available at the refuge, call 568-5987.

Dave Odell will teach the course from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, at the Montezuma Audubon Center. Tim Noga will teach a class from 9 a.m. to noon Sunday, Sept. 30, also at the center. To register for either class, call 365-3588 or e-mail cstokes-cawley@audubon.org.

Noga also will instruct a class aimed at youth from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, at the refuge visitor's center. To register for this course, call 568-5987 ext. 228.

See architecture on walking tour

The Community Preservation Committee is offering walking tours of South Street from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday.

This is the fourth installment of the committee's Tea and Architecture Series. The free event will feature guides stationed along historic South Street who will tell the story of each home. Everyone can walk at their own pace.

Peter Wisbey, executive director of Seward House, will speak about the proper etiquette and customs of serving tea in the Victorian era at 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. at the Seward House, 33 South St., in Auburn. Tea will be served.
