After working under three titles this year, Christopher J. DeProspero resigned as treasurer of Auburn on Friday.
He did not give notice, leaving staff members scrambling to cover the position, city manager Mark Palesh said.
DeProspero did not give a reason, he added. He quit Friday afternoon and left the same day. DeProspero was hired at Cuddy Financial on William Street.
Calls to DeProspero's home were not answered.
The women working in the treasurer's office and Comptroller Lisa Green will pick up the slack until Palesh hires a replacement.
“We opened it up internally last time and we hired someone we thought was a good fit,” Palesh said.
DeProspero replaced Marie Nellenbeck when she quit late in the summer.
Palesh will begin the process of filling the job this week. He plans to open the job to both current city workers and external candidates.
When Palesh filled the vacancy left by Nellenbeck, DeProspero moved from the planning department to her position. Previously, he filled Jennifer Haines's job as planning and economic development program manager before making the leap into the financial department. Haines was promoted to director of that office at the end of March.
The job of treasurer is a union job included in the Civil Service Employees Association, so the manager's ordinance council passed in July capping salaries and decreasing percent managers can get for raises did not affect the position, Palesh said.
