David Dempsey was the clear winner in the recent debate between Auburn Democratic mayoral candidates David Dempsey and Michael Quill.
In comparison to Dempsey, who has had 16 years of successful political leadership experience in this city and county, having been elected to public office eight separate times, Quill's lack of governmental experience and his unclear positions were obvious and troubling.
As an example, on the matter of a casino, Quill did not express a personal opinion and said that he would want a voter referendum; Dempsey reported the results of his extensive research on this issue in another community, detailed the specific negative effects that he had observed in his visit there and said that while he would personally be opposed, he would also put the matter to a referendum.
Elected officials should provide specific guidance and leadership on important matters, not simply conduct referendums.
As a second example, in closing remarks, Quill thanked the sponsors of the event, The Citizen and the Holiday Inn, and encouraged people to get out and vote.
By contrast, Dempsey articulated a thoughtful and compelling vision for the future of the city, while also thanking the event's sponsors.
The mayoral debate was held on Sept. 11.
It was extremely difficult for us, on this historic day, not to be able to support the career aspirations of such a distinguished firefighter as Quill.
However, the incumbent's administration has been characterized by numerous resignations of senior city officials; we have not seen that this continuous turmoil has created economic or other benefits for the community.
If meaningful change is to occur, we encourage voters to elect a mayoral candidate with the skill, insight and credentials to do the job.
That would be David Dempsey.
