No one was seriously injured after a car collided with a train at 7:45 a.m. today on the Eastbound Arterial where the Fingerlakes Railroad crosses.
Roger G. Jackson, 67, drove the car into the lead car of the three-car train, which was traveling northeast across the intersection.

The Auburn Police Department said the Auburn resident disregarded a red light signaling traffic to stop and the train's warning horn and attempted to pass through the intersection as a train was approaching.

The police issued Jackson a ticket for passing through a red light.

Roger's wife, Vicky M. Matheson-Jackson, 52, was transported to Auburn Memorial Hospital for evaluation. She suffered bruising on her knees.

Their 1999 Pontiac received substantial damage and was towed from the scene, police said. Eastbound Route 5 traffic was detoured for about 35 to 40 minutes.

" I just visited family in Auburn for 14 days. I must say for a small city the size of Auburn there is A LOT OF DRIVING IMPROVEMENT NEEDED; not just senior citizens drivers!!!! Enough Said People. "

" Its not an accident when you hit a train. It's not like a dog running out in front of you. You have to have your head where the sun don't shine not to see it crossing the street. Especailly when the lights are red and the horn is blowing. I do not feel sorry for this bozo. He made me late for work because he is a moron. "

" First of all, he is NOT 67! Another "Citizen" error! Could the sun have been an issue? Do you know where he was going at the time? It was an accident! He got a ticket. LIGHTEN UP all you perfect people! "

" I think this guy need a pyschiatric evaluation. How could you not see the red light, train horn blowing, and giant train in front of you. He should not be on the road. "

" I agree with what just venting wrote. Now I have no problem with senior citizen driving but I think there should be a law were there is a mandatory road test after 65. I mean we all know you just have to go to the DMV and read the third line to renew your liscense. For crying out aloud the third line is so big Stevie Wonder can read it. We have to make sure they are safe on the roads not just with eye sight. A road test will find out if they are safe to still drive or not. "

" There is a unniversal law that states all cars must yeild to Trains, based simply on the weight alone. How could you ever try to outrun a train? 80 tons of screaming metal does not have time to stop, keep clear. "

" Another reason for senior citizens to get a yearly eye test for their auto license privilege. "

" People need to watch them selves around the tracks. I seen many times that people try to out run the rail road engines in Auburn. Its hard to stop a railroad engine that weight is 80 tons and and rail cars behind him that are 100 ton plus per car. "
