Exercise is important in staying limber, fit
In honor of Active Aging Week this week, The Citizen is spotlighting seniors in our community.
Today we speak with Stephanie Porado.
Q. What is your ideal workout?
A. I enjoy watching Fit TV. We just got it here on Time Warner. I can watch it all day, from morning to night, and they give you all different types of exercises to do to keep you limber. They tell you how to stretch, and it's not all that strenuous. Also, I like to walk at least a mile a day.
Q. Do you find living in a senior center helpful when it comes to being active?
A. Yes. There's always someone around here, you have company. At home you're within your own walls or you walk around in your yard.
Q. What obstacles do you face when it comes to being active?
A. You have to make up your mind not to stay at home in the morning, that you're going to get out and do something instead of hanging around here.
Q. What is the best way to get a fellow senior to get active?
A. If they're down in the dumps, give them some advice. Give them encouragement. Tell them, ‘I'm going for a walk, would you like to come?' or say you're going to the mall and ask if they want to come too. You don't have to shop, you can just poke around.
Q. What's the best way for you to relax?
A. I don't know ... I fall asleep at the drop of a dime. I'm just a relaxed person.
Q. If you could meet any three people in the world, who would they be?
A. I'd like to meet Oprah, I admire her for what she did on her own, she deserves it. She didn't look for help, and she's very giving now. Also, Arthur Godfrey. He was on the radio in my younger days, and I don't know why, but I thought he was a very good man before I learned more about him later. And my guardian angel, because he or she has taken very good care of me so far.
Q. What do you like most about the Finger Lakes?
A. I like the lakes, Skaneateles and Owasco, and they have those beautiful walkways. I like the change of seasons also. And the people are friendly too.
