As we age, we can recall some good memories and some not so good. In the early 1930s I was brought up on Easterly Avenue. All my neighborhood friends went to James Street School, which was on the property now used by the post office for a parking lot at the corner of James and Orchard Street. There were no lunch periods at noon, so we walked home which wasn't far for me, but long distance for the kids in the West End.
When I and two of my Court Street friends, George Books and George Patrick, were about 10, there was a bad accident. An out-of-control cab struck and killed my two friends as they crossed Genesee Street at James. After that accident, a motorcycle cop was assigned as a crossing guard.
I'd had to see a report of that accident at that dangerous crossing at Washington and Arterial West and East.
