Good old days had some bad memories

Saturday, September 22, 2007 11:20 PM EDT

As we age, we can recall some good memories and some not so good. In the early 1930s I was brought up on Easterly Avenue. All my neighborhood friends went to James Street School, which was on the property now used by the post office for a parking lot at the corner of James and Orchard Street. There were no lunch periods at noon, so we walked home which wasn't far for me, but long distance for the kids in the West End.
When I and two of my Court Street friends, George Books and George Patrick, were about 10, there was a bad accident. An out-of-control cab struck and killed my two friends as they crossed Genesee Street at James. After that accident, a motorcycle cop was assigned as a crossing guard.

I'd had to see a report of that accident at that dangerous crossing at Washington and Arterial West and East.

" An accident could kill a student on the slowest dead end street in the city. Or an airplane could make a crash landing on a students head. Is the school responsible for that too? Please use your head to reason. I understand the emotion but use common sense. All truly dangerous street crossings to school should have crossing guards no questions. "

" I don't recall the school system being responsible for the student from the minute he leaves his porch til they arrive at school. This is not the responsibility of the school. It is your responsibility as a parent. If you want all students bused to school then you cannot pick and choose who gets transported. All students will have to be bussed. Every bus that is added costs about $50,000 for fuel, driver salaries, bus monitors, and the bus. If you are willing to pay more taxes for all kids to be bussed, then that is great. I doubt you will get a majority of voters to agree. But if you think that educational services are going to be cut for this luxury then you have a big battle to fight. The only way you can get kids bussed that live within 1 mile is for those families to pay a transportation fee payable upfront at the beginning of the school year. This fee will have to reflect the actual increase in expense. Why not just transport your kid yourself? "

" Maybe you should read the last sentence. The whole crux of his editorial was about the safety and welfare of the kids. You must be a board member, you certainly sound like one "

" I don't think Mr. Drennen cares about the school board and their issues. He wanted to discuss his life as he knew it during his childhood here in Auburn. A great article sir, I really enjoyed the part about the school, I never knew that there was a school there. Very interesting. Thanks! "

" This is exactly the point Mr Drennen. The superintendent has demonstrated a character flaw when it comes to making sound decisions concerning the safety and welfare of our children. I would also venture to guess that the volume of traffic has increased dramatically since you were a child. This should have never been an issue. In fact it wouldn't have been an issue if this board of education was doing the job they were elected to do. Instead they are all too concerned about the TURF issue rather than educating our children, and insuring they are safe to and from school. This district has placed the lives of our children in their hands, and they let the parents down, by demonstrating flawed decision making abilities. "
