A performance at Cayuga Community College next week will include everything from scuba tanks to step ladders, and it promises to have a kitchen sink in the mix as well.
Recycle Percussion Performers is bringing its man versus machine tour to CCC's newly-remodeled auditorium Tuesday evening.
But don't compare this group, at least too much, to the popular Stomp show that has seemed to be endlessly touring the United States for the past 10 years. These four guys from New Hampshire bring a more hard rock sensibility to the proceedings - while they play percussion on an odd assortment of household and more worldly items; they also throw DJ grooves and bass hooks into their rthymic soup and display some strong vocal prowess as well.
“Their show is a high-energy mix of African, Latin and American rock and hip hop rhythms that will both assault and soothe the senses,” promoter Aron Oberhold promises.
“It's going to be an awesome show,” said Norman Lee, CCC director of Student Activities. “They're very popular.”
Lee encourages people to buy tickets prior to the show to ensure interested attendees get one of around 300 seats available.
Advance-sale tickets can be bought at the Student Development Office, which is right near the main entrance to the college.
Lee, who has been at CCC since 1996, saw the Recycled Percussion Performers at a conference for college bookings several years ago.
He's been trying to land them ever since.
Invariably, the group is often compared to “Stomp.” But Lee said that is not an apt comparison. While the Recycle Percussion Performers put on a family-friendly show, there's a “little less dancing and a lot more percussion,” he said.
The group has performed at NFL halftime games and opened for such diverse acts as L.L. Cool J and 311.
“It's entertainment at its best,” Lee said. “They really try to get the audience into it. Your eyes and ears will be fully involved.”
