She is a former Auburnian and parishioner of SS. Peter and Paul Church, and she was recently elected General Superior of the Sisters of Saint Basil the Great and will be stationed in Rome. She was elected by nuns representing Providences from Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Croatia, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Ukraine and the United States during the ninth General Chapter, held in Rome July 9 through 23.
The students and faculty/staff greeted her with the traditional Ukrainian greeting of bread, the very essence of life and a symbol of Jesus who is the source of our lives. Also she was given salt, which is a necessity for life. It never loses its taste and preserves and flavors food.
Lastly, she was given flowers. Flowers represent the beauty of the world that God has given us.
Sister Miriam Claire Kowal was also presented with an icon of the Mother of God and Jesus.
The Sisters of St. Basil are a worldwide order focused on education, the spiritual growth of Ukrainian Catholics, and the promotion and retention of Ukrainian traditions.
As newly elected General Superior, Kowal will serve as the spiritual and organizational leader of the entire order.
Additionally Kowal is required to personally visit and assess all locations of the Order during her six-year term, covering 10 countries on four continents. Her main goals during her tenure are to increase the visibility and recognition of the Sisters of the Order of St. Basil the Great and promote education of the Order's founder, Saint Basil of Cappadocia (who lived circa 330 A.D.).
Most recently, Kowal has been serving as principal of St. Josaphat Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral School in Parma, Ohio, where she was instrumental in its 2007 re-accreditation by the Ohio Catholic School Accrediting Association.
