Howell nets hat trick as Wolves get first victory

UNION SPRINGS - Mike Howell scored a hat trick and added an assist for the Union Springs boys soccer team on Wednesday, in his team's first win of the season, a 6-0 effort over Newfield.
The Wolves outshot Newfield 28-9 and Nick Schooley, Ryan Lawson and Jason Schenck provided the other goals in the win. Zach Wertman had two assists in the center midfielder position, and Eric Hylwa chipped in with another. Sweeper Justin Lyndaker controlled the defense in the back, while Robert Ferro (five saves) and Schenck (three saves) played well in goal.

“The senior leadership led the way in this homecoming game,” Wolves coach Jim Hodges said.

Union Springs (1-5-1) heads to Lansing on Friday.

Southern Cayuga 2, Groton 1

Tony Brown-Rejman scored the winning goal for the Chiefs with about six minutes left in the game. Sean Driscoll scored the first goal, in the first half.

Ed Richter recorded nine saves.

Southern Cayuga (6-1-1) hosts Candor, Tuesday.

Marathon 4, Moravia 0

The Blue Devils were outshot 38-6 in the loss. AJ Rouse had 12 saves in the net.

Moravia (1-5-2) travels to Spencer Van Etten on Friday.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Port Byron 27, Onondaga 28

Chris Martin came in first place overall (17:52) for Onondaga, but the Panthers owned the next three slots to earn the win. Christian Cobb (18:35) came in second, Eric Urwin (23:54) was third and Zac Leja (23:57) took fourth. Tyler Wellington (25:48) came in eighth and Ray Cereo (32:16) placed 10th for the young Panthers team.

Auburn 19, Nottingham 41

The Maroons' Scott Garrett placed first overall (17:21) and Rob Culver came in third (18:14). John Tehan, Chris Catino and Paul Farinelli finished tied for fourth place (19:42).

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Port Byron 15, Port Byron 50

Katie Wyckoff finished first overall (23:20) for Port Byron.

Felicia Darrow placed third (25:04), Amanda Vitale (25:31) took fourth and Heather Kurtz came in sixth (30:12).

Auburn 17, Nottingham 42

Liz Mahoney finished first (31:49), Meghan Guzewicz was second (23:21), Meg Peck was third (23:48) and Kara Catino placed fifth (24:34). Patricia Fleischman rounded out the top five in sixth place (25:07).

GOLF

Auburn 183, Nottingham 269

Sean Hogan led Auburn by shooting a 2-under (34) at Highland Golf Club on Wednesday.

Ryan May carded a 35, Bob Dushatinski scored 37, Steve Dec turned in a 38, Frank Muntani and Anthony Siracusa each recorded a 39 and James Cutillo scored a 40.

The Maroons (7-0 league, 8-2 overall) are at Henninger on Friday.
