AUBURN - Daniel Sincebaugh comfortably defeated fellow Democrat Sean Stanyon in Tuesday's Cayuga County Legislature District 14 primary election.
With the unofficial 298-44 victory over Stanyon, Sincebaugh will face Republican Michael Didio in the November election. Both are vying to replace Democrat Michael Lepak, who has reached his 12-year term limit.
“I want to thank the people for their support, I look forward to a good campaign,” the 33-year-old Sincebaugh said while celebrating at Friends on West Genesee Street. “I'll be working hard from now to November to bring my message to the people, bring a new perspective and accountability to the people.”
He hopes to bring legislators from all six city districts in the legislature together, regardless of party affiliation. Sincebaugh is also running on the Independence Party line.
After 15 years of working on other campaigns for the county Democratic Committee, this is Sincebaugh's first time running for public office on his own. The Democratic Party is poised for success similar to the 2006 election season, he said Tuesday.
“I hope all the Democrats continue that in 2007,” Sincebaugh said, recognizing the effort of his 21-year-old intra-party rival.
Stanyon said he was proud of his campaign, which he found to be a worthwhile experience.
“I learned a lot,” he said. “I got to meet the voters, meet the people.
“I got out there and tried to make a difference,” Stanyon said. “I'm proud of myself, proud of my community, my family and the young people I influenced.”
The two-time Auburn Enlarged City School District board candidate forced a primary with Sincebaugh after collecting signatures and spending the next few months placing advertisements and signs. On Tuesday, Stanyon wasn't sure which candidate he would support in the District 14 race.
The young Democrat was confident this will not be his last run for public office.
“I'm only 21 and I've got my whole life ahead of me,” Stanyon said.
