Ducayne ignores truth when writing about turf

To Judy Ducayne: You have once again taken it upon yourself to bash good hard-working people who are doing their best to improve our community, by making false statements or half-truths at best about our school board and our athletic facilities. I find it terribly unprofessional for you to use your public forum to spread misinformation.
Last year you encouraged voters to vote down a tax increase that would have allowed us to repair, improve and update some of our athletic facilities. Facilities our forefathers took great pride in building many years ago, are now sorely in need of our attention. All we had to do was agree to pay a few extra dollars a month to ensure the state taxes we pay come back to our community. Eighty percent of the cost of those improvements would have been covered by the state. We said no, so our state tax dollars went to another district.

Are we going to be remembered as the generation who reaped the benefits of the generation before us and passed the buck to the next? Why can't we improve our academics and our athletics simultaneously? I for one believe they go hand in hand, as does music, dance, religion, etc. I watched our spring teams practicing in the high school parking lot because the fields were so muddy. The lacrosse team had to play a game in the parking lot!

You made reference to our football team winning the state championship. That team could not practice on its own field, but had to be bussed each day to playable fields in Syracuse.

Let's give the school board a little credit, they are trying to do what's best for the students and the community. Updating our facilities benefits the entire community. All it takes is a community that cares and a few extra dollars a month. We can't say no forever.

" jlmorgansr, We don't often agree with each other but I find you to be a sincere person in the subject of taxes. Google "proposition 2 1/2" and see what can be done. The basics are that for the government to increase taxes more than 2 1/2% they must ask to taxpayers to vote on the increase called an over-ride. The taxpayers can also vote on an under-ride requesting that the government can only raise the same amount of money as the previous year. The people have a lot more power. Look it up, you will enjoy the read. "

" CM, they pay to maintain the stadium now. What difference will a newly restored stadium and turf make on the budget? Do you think before you comment? "

" If they did as brew suggests who then pays for the upkeep? "

" Steve: We are talking about football. I love the game more than the average person, but I love keeping my house in repair and up to date with taxes, and family clothed more than football. All of the spending has to ahve a limit to necessary items in this day and age. You say that it is only a few bucks----a few here, a few there--it all adds up. "

" That is something the Auburn school district wont approach. They would rather go farther in debt, and tax the already over burdened taxpayers. There is no doubt that the sports boosters could raise that money in no time. In fact the school clubs could hold dances or car washed, or what ever to help raise the money needed. I am sure the public would be behind that effort 100%. But like I said, this is Auburn, the only word the know is tax "

" In a neighboring town where I live they are raising money from local businesses, banks, corporations and grass roots fundraisers such as wine tastings, bake sales, golf tourneys, softball games, etc to raise money to rebuild the local football stadium and install turf for $1.7 million. Not one penny is being asked from the school system. These people know that school budgets are tight and their budget must be spent for the best possible education. This city is approx. the same size as Auburn. Your goal would be only half of their's as you are not rebuilding the stadium. Energy should be spent in this manner to help the sports program. The latest figure this town has raised is $700,000. And they will do it! "

" From what I read last week--wasn't there this HUGE grant that is SUPPOSED to be used for building upgrades? Have you -STEVE-asked syracuse why they are pulling up their turf?? State champs or not Auburn doesnt need nor can afford TURF! I see many PRO games on TV without turf and they have survived--some of the best games are in the MUD games! Maybe a cheaper solution would be btter drainage? But turf NO!!! "

" Apparently you yourself are ignoring the truth Steve. The truth is this district and the taxpayers that live in it have given 10 of millions over the years. Yet by the same token the district has not produced the quality product we all expected. Our drop out rate is through the cieling, while at the same time the graduation rate is in the basement. Inspite of this, the board just hired JD Pabis to be the NEW Superintendent at a rate hight than the rate which was paid to John Plume. This board has spent money hand over fist yet, the teachers and the secretaries, and the other unions, and the taxpayers, have been ignored. If you are an administrator you can expect to receive hefty raises, and golden parachute retirement packages. But if you live on the West end of Auburn and you are a amongst the working poor, you can expect to have your childs busing removed. in a feeble attempt to save money, yet then turn around and demand we spend millions on turf. The people took all of this into account once when it was voted down, the board, refuses to except the fact that they were told no. And for your information, this was the first time they were ever refused. So I will continue to vote no and I will encourage everyone I know to follow suit. "
