Dental hygienist always a winner
Each Tuesday, The Citizen features a health professional from the

Finger Lakes community in The Banks: This week, we spotlight Jackie Baulick, a dental hygienist for Dr. Thomas Hogan.

Q. What is the most rewarding part of your job?

A. When I see someone with bad dental health and we can turn them around again so everything is healthy.

Q. What is the most challenging?

A. Convincing people how important it is to have really good hygiene.

Q. Describe your ideal patient.

A. Someone who has a healthy attitude toward their body and takes good care of themselves.

Q. What is the best piece of advice you could give someone to stay healthy?

A. Listen to your body and take good care of it.

Q. What's the most common misconception you hear from patients?

A. Probably the fact that most come in thinking if they rinse their mouths out with mouthwash, it takes the place of good hygiene. It's easier to buy a product rather than do the common sense thing.

Q. If you weren't in the health care field, what career or field would you do?

A. I'd have my own organic restaurant with healthy foods.

Q. For someone considering a career like yours, what advice would you offer?

A. It's a great career and the ideal job for women who also want to have a family. You can work part-time and still raise kids.

Q. What's your ideal cure for the common cold?

A. Listen to your body, get a lot of rest and eat chicken soup.

Q. In your opinion, which medical TV show is most realistic? Which is your favorite?

A. I love the Discovery Channel.

Q. Despite being in the health care field, people would probably be surprised that when I'm off the job, I _________.

A. I'm a big contest winner; I win a lot. I just won a bicycle at Wegmans last week. I just have luck at it. And I like to volunteer my time at my church.
